Frustrated and lost

Hey all! I need your help.

I have done research and decided to use cloth diapers from the get go (Newborn and beyond.. including overnight).

The problem is that once I've voiced this, my mother keeps yelling at me telling me I'm wrong and will be doing the worst thing by CDing over night and as a newborn. That my child will have rashes and I need to use disposables during these times and CD only in the house because it's not logical for me to "make the child suffer while out all wet and in a carseat. It will leak!"  Any who, if any of you could offer insight on this matter I'd really appreciate it. She's making me doubt these decisions I've made and second guess the plausibility of it. I feel as if I'm drowning. No one I know CDs. Do you have success with Overnighting and CDing a newborn?

We did cloth from the beginning and my guy was 3 weeks early. We are now 18 weeks and he's never had a diaper rash. We use cotton only. We loved the blueberry newborn Simplex AIO's but only had a few. They have a snap for the cord stump. We also used Green Mountain workhorses pinned down for the stump. After that we just used a lot of prefolds really.

I have not yet started my CD adventure but I've read over and over that it IS doable! It's seemingly harder in the beginning due to frequency of diaper changes needed, but as long as you have enough diapers to keep up then you should be fine! Have some disposis on hand so that if worse comes to worst you can have some to mix in with your CD's, or use them while you're doing laundry if you need to.

I think no matter what age you start to CD at, you'll have to get used to what works for you and your baby. Good luck!

We did cloth from day 3 with our April baby. I used Little Joeys for the first few weeks and they had the chord snap so it didn't interfere with her chord. At 3 weeks we switched to GM pre folds and thirties covers. We have never had a leak, our daughter has never had any sort of rash. 

I also have a young toddler so we are out and about all the time and she was in and out of the carseat, Ergo ect frequently and I have never felt like I was ''making her suffer. "

At night I found it very helpful to have 3-4 diapers stuffed and ready to use because newborns need to be changed frequently (at least mine did). 

FWIW with my first child, we used disposables until he was 3 months. I actually had more leaks, and sooo many more blowouts with the disposables, then I have ever had with her cloth. I  did not find disposables any easier then my cloth.

Thank you so much! This makes me feel much more confident! I'm thinking of using 2 in one's for the simplicity of it and only cotton/hemp inserts. I will def look into the diapers you've all used.
Now to figure out how to tell mom that it's not her decision or baby and to back off. Haha.

Something else to note.. Cloth diapers are so much different now than they were when our parents had us. Maybe taking your mom to a store that sells a large selection of them will show her just how far they have come!

So sorry you have such a negative and unsupportive voice speaking into your life. Just nod and smile and IGNORE HER. You can totally do this. Guess what, cloth means fewer diaper rashes, less leaking, and they are way better at preventing the dreaded poop explosion.

@Madisson that is a great idea! I think I will dare to attempt it. Don't know if it will do much good though.
@DanandVan thanks for the support! My mom is sort of stuck in the past. It's tough but you're right I need to let it roll off or sadly just not talk about decisions I've made regarding baby. You can lead a horse to water but you can't make them drink it. Oh! That makes me so excited and less wanting to do disposables!

If you search old threads, you'll see that there is a lot of controversy about that FLCDS group. Just because they have "Science" in their name doesn't mean they are doing good science. Some of their information is good, but some of it isn't as universal as they make it out to be. Like anything on the internet, read with a good dose of healthy skepticism and decide if it actually makes sense to you.

The old regs on this board started a FB group called Cloth Diaper Tech Support. You'll get a much more individually-tailored problem-solving approach with them.

I started cloth at 2 months because I didn't have a newborn stash and LO was too small for the one size stash I had... Then I drug my heels starting because I felt intimidated... Looking back, i am so glad I went for it! I had so many leaks and blowouts in disposables, but cloth is so reliable... My LO also seems way more comfortable in cloth in terms of fit... I am sorry you do the have support, but I would think that the negative folks will come around when they see how well they work

I currently have 2 in cloth, 23 months and 8 months! We started in disposables, but when I found I was pregnant again we knew we needed to save some money, so the 8mo has been in cloth from the start!! We love our cotton all in 2s!! I think for this next baby we will try some prefolds and snappies!! There are a lot of cloth resources out there, and each mama has a different preference, so you just have to figure out what YOU like!!
For overnights, we like the CottonBabies Flips Overnights! We have NEVER had an overnight leak with them! Natural fibers are more absorbent and trimmer than microfiber.
For going out, we are very active people! We are out and about at least once a day, and normally are only home for naps and nighttime! We have PlanetWise wet/dry bags. They have 2 pockets so you can keep your clean diapers in 1 and your dirty in the other! The biggest difference is that I don't have 10 disposables packed at all times, I have to think ahead and pack what I think I'll need! You can easily change cloth diapers out and about, so no need for baby to sit in a wet diaper for too long! And we just wrap up and take care of pooped diapers when we get home! Easy peasy!
As for mothers and mother-in-laws, we find its best not to include them in our decision making! When we switched to cloth, we actually didn't tell anyone for a week or so, so we didn't have to hear the comments and get discouraged!

I CD'd my son from 3 months to potty training at 2.5 years. He never suffered. Honestly I think that with CD you change them more often (every 2 hours or so) and people rely on disposables for way too long a stretch between changes. I agree that they've come a long way since she used them (or didn't). I did eventually need to used disposables overnight with my son because he was a heavy night time wetter and slept at 12 hours clips. Good luck. Stay positive.

We love the newborn thx's. I decided to sell everything else we have and just buy
more thx's. They are so nice, easy and simple. My husband loves them and keeps talking about how easy it is.

Neither of my girls has ever worn anything but cloth. 24/7, on trips, overnight, as newborns. It's seriously not a big deal at all. Bottom line- it comes down to a few extra loads of laundry a week. Tell your mom if she doesn't have Anything nice to say, then don't say anything at all.
