Hi all! New to The Bump! Was curious as to when other moms introduced bottle feeding. I plan on breastfeeding and bottle feeding breast milk also supplementing IG need be. Any advise/thoughts?? Thanks!
I waited until DS was 6 weeks old so breastfeeding was well established. It was still a challenge as he wasn't a big fan of the bottle but we got there eventually.
With DD we had an issue with jaundice and she was actually hospitalized when she was 5 days old. The jaundice was so out of control that she was too sleepy to actively breastfeed. That broke my heart, so I started pumping so I could feed her while she was in with the lights. (They had been talking about putting her on an IV if she didn't start eating more.) She took it like a champ and I did every other feeding with a bottle during our stay. She didn't have an issue transitioning between breast and bottle, and when we got home it continued to be a success. It was nice to be able to have my husband feed her while I took a bathroom break or just had ten minutes to rest on my own.
My son was almost 4 weeks early, his mouth is still pretty tiny, so he has a hard time latching on. In the hospital they had me give him formula exclusively for about 5 days because he had very bad jaundice and he wasn't peeing/pooping enough from the breastmilk. He still isn't latching on, so I'm currently pumping and bottle feeding him the breastmilk until his jaw muscles can get a bit stronger.
