Anyone have better luck with spectra than Medela?

I tried a Medela pump with my first and my body would not respond. Ds2 I got a dr brown pump and had better luck but it didn't seem very efficient. I got milk but only 3 oz over four to five hours. Barely kept us going even with reverse cycling. Ds3 is on the way and I am thinking about a spectra after hearing good things. Wondering if anyone who didn't do well with Medela had luck with this as the flanges and things look mostly the same to me. Thanks ladies!

  • I use medela and a spectra pump. I ep but insurance won't pay for q hospital grade. I do think with my medela I do a little better with emptying but its usually not by much. Also medela does better if i am engorged since the suction seems a little better. The 2 are made differently. Spectra massages more than medela. I like some features better than my medela like the light and clock.
I know a lot of women on my birth month board who use spectra and love it.
  • I love my spectra. Much better for me than medela was
  • Loading the player...
  • I haven't used it yet, but based on reading tons and tons of comparisons and reviews I order a Spectra (and my insurance covered it).
  • I used a Medela Symphony (hospital grade) for the first two months, and then switched to the Spectra S2. In my experience, Spectra is more gentle but gets more milk in less time. I use all my Medela parts with it because the flanges that came with the Spectra are too small for me.

If I were a Medela executive, I would be very, very afraid...
  • I used the Medela Symphony hospital grade pimp and the Pump in Style Advanced with my daughter 3 years ago and my milk never came in. This time I got the Spectra S2 with my son and my milk came in within 3 days. The S2 has 2 separate controls for vacuum and cycles as opposed to the Medela PISA so it allows you to customize it to what works best for you. It's also much quieter and feels more like a flutter instead of just a strong suction on your nipples. I prefer the Medela flanges so I retro fitted then on the S2 and absolutely love it! Even if your insurance doesn't cover a hospital grade pump its much cheaper than the Medela anyways. I highly recommend Spectra over Medela! I did have a hard time getting opinions from lactation counselors about the S2 because they are not very familiar with it and kept trying to push me towards the Medela since that's what they are used to...so glad I didn't listen to them!
