pinched siatic nerve

I have a pinched siatic never in my lower back ( left side ) &I'm miserable , they won't refer me to physical therapy because I'm six months pregnant but won't allow any pain killers or surgery for the severity of it again because I'm pregnant , I can barely walk , sitting down makes me cry uncontrollably I've tried every over the counter &herbal method , ice , hot , baths , stretching &nothing helps , I just want to throw in the towel

Re: pinched siatic nerve

  • I was in the same boat with my last pregnancy. :( I don't have any advice that you haven't already tried, so just prayers! I know that pain and it is NOT a joke. Holy cow.
  • Loading the player...
  • I can't even begin to imagine. Is acupuncture permitted? I don't know if that would help but I'm just throwing out an idea.
  • You poor thing!! I have something similar but on my right side. A friend of mine happens to be a massage therapist and she said absolutely NO heat. It makes the tissue swell around the nerve even more and will make it more "angry" . She said to sit on an ice pack where it hurts for a good 20/30 minutes and then have my husband roll a tennis ball over my right bum-cheek/lower back for as long as I could stand and then ice it again. We did this, and I screamed bloody murder during the massage, but I was WAY more mobile afterward and the pain lessened substantially. That being said, it ended up hurting just as bad the next day, but I think if the ice/massage routine were done every day, it would help a ton.
  • Another vote for the tennis ball massage like abodenmiller (pp) described it! Hope you feel better soon! :-)
  • Have you tried massage/myotherapy?? I found this helped me heaps!

Chiropractic is great for sciatica and perfectly safe! I am a chiropractor and we treat pregnant women all the time! I've been getting adjusted once a week since I found out I was pregnant to ward off any aches and pains.
  • I had this earlier in pregnancy and I was miserable!!! It was crazy painful and it went down my leg into my foot, I felt the same way! I couldn't walk, or sit and I could lay in one position that would get uncomfortable and hurt after a little while... My chiropractor aligned my back and I have felt way better. I would really try that!
  • Have you gone to see a chiropractor? I have always had this problem for the past 6 years from a sports injury... But pain mess helped... I pinched this nerve in the beginning and went to my chiropractor helped out a lot and mine even specializes in pregnancy but they don't need to for you to go see them.
  • I agree with above posts - go see a chiropractor. I'm a chiro and have worked with many pregnant women to alleviate the aches and pains associated with pregancy. Adjusting throughout pregnancy is perfectly safe, but even if that's not something that you're comfortable with, there are plenty of other treatment options that your chiro can discuss with you. Soft tissue therapy, gentle stretching and stability exercises can make a huge difference with sciatic nerve pain, and will also help prep your body for the next few months of pregnancy when the changes to our bodies become even more drastic.

I'm also not sure why they won't refer you for physio. Physios that have worked with pregnant women before can also help you out with this problem.

As with any practitioner, just do some research to find someone in your area that has a good reputation and some experience with pregnant patients.

    Good luck!
  • I have been having this same issue for them last 7 weeks. I was actually sent to physical therapy. I have stretches I do and ice often. One thing my therapist recommended and has helped a ton is a maternity belt. I tried the single belts from motherhood and those sucked for me. I had better luck with the more cumbersome ones that go underneath your belly and has a strap that goes over your belly. They do sell those at motherhood also.
  • I'm so surprised they won't refer you to a physical therapist. I'm lucky that my husband is a PT because I was having the same issue. Every day he had me do exercises, stretches and he'd move my hips and after about a week it was gone. I literally couldn't take a single step without the sharpest pain ever and after a week it's gone and hasn't come back. Granted, I do exercises every few days though so that's probably helping. Maybe you can INSIST they refer you to a PT? You may also want to call a PT near you and ask what their cash rates are. Even if you have to go in once or twice, they may give you a whole home exercise program. I know my husband sees a lot of pregnant women in the clinic either for this issue or back pain, leg pain, neck pain (usually from an increase in chest size which encourages poor posture), etc. So I KNOW you should be able to visit a PT!! Hope this helps!
  • Also, one other suggestion since the maternity belt can be a bit bulky or a pain (for some), ask about kinesiotape. My hubby puts it under my belly and it helps to lift the belly, thus taking the pressure and weight off. My OB was so impressed he went in and did a workshop for all the doctors there to show them how to do it. It's inexpensive, easy, removable, etc. Just a thought!
  • Is your belly too big to try the yoga position Downward facing dog? I'm big even not pregnant, and nothing gives me immediate relief like that. I agree with PP, that you would probably benefit from a chiro or massage appointment, but if you need even a tiny amount of relief IMMEDIATELY, I can't recommend DFD enough.

The ergonomic assessor at my workplace also recommended sitting on an exercise ball for 20 minutes in the morning, and 20 in the afternoon, and get off my office chair. (He said no more, because you'll start to slump.)
(I was overweight pre-pregnancy and did it then, but can still do this with my husband's assistance at 27 weeks.)
