Tell us how you and your significant other met. How long have you been together? How long were you together before knowing they were "the one."

My DH and I have been together for 5 years, married for 2. We initially met online, but our first face-to-face meeting was at a coffee shop. I knew he was "the one" around our 3rd date - we were in a store, he picked up a plate and asked me if I liked the pattern. When I said yes, he said "... then these are the plates we will get when we buy our first house." Two and a half years later, when we bought our first house, we went back and got those plates.

Dh and I met almost 10 years ago (2/2006) online. We chatted but I was seeing someone. Well that someone dumped me a few days after Valentine's Day and a week later we met IRL.
I think I new he was the one when 8 months together my mom told me she had breast cancer. He would make dinner for us sometimes, extra sauce things like that.

8/2007 he bought a house and asked me to move in. I told him I don't play house and my hand was far too light. 11/2007 he popped the question while we were on vacation in Jamaica. 5/2009 we were married. We

My BF and I also met online and our first date was at a bar... He was not my "type" and an actor... Since I work in the film industry I've always swore I'd never date an actor.  8-|  So I was very hesitant to admit, to either of us, he was "the one" About 4 months into our relationship he needed to start looking for a new place to live since his lease was about up, and I was looking to buy a house. One day he went with me to look at houses, which was great, then we looked at apartments for him and I got really angry. After a "wtf is wrong with you" conversation I realized I didn't want him to sign a year lease... It was news to both of us. He moved in. We bought a house together last year. October will be 3 years for us. 

@pekaboosmiles - I love that he was the one that asked about the plate and that you went back and got them! That's so cute!

Add us to the "met online"'group! We met in person after chatting online and by phone for a few weeks. We met up downtown at an art fair and I swore I wouldn't be going anywhere alone with him until we'd spent more time together. Lo and behold, he flashed me a winning smile and we ended up driving somewhere else (together!) for dinner. I knew that night that I could trust him. We got engaged the following August and married that November. This November will be our third anniversary. Time flies when you are having fun.

DH and I met online too! We chatted for a couple months and our first date was April 14th, 2012 (almost 3.5 years ago). It was quite obvious to both of us very early on that this was the real deal. Our first date lasted 6 hours. He said he knew this was going to work when I leaned over during dinner that first night and ate a bite of food directly off his plate without asking - that's not something you do unless you feel very comfortable with someone! He joked that he was going to marry me about a month into our relationship, but I knew he wasn't joking. I introduced him to my family after 3 months, and he was the FIRST boyfriend I had ever introduced to my family (in 35 years!) so they also knew this was very serious. We exchanged our first "I love you's" that same weekend. We moved in together after a year and a bit. We've been through a lot together already, including job losses, battles with depression, and difficult relations with family members. He proposed during a trip to Glacier National Park last July, and we were married this May.

I guess I'm the first one who met her husband at a bar!  I was out with friends and one of my friends ran into someone she knew and he ended up hanging out with us for the rest of the evening. We ran into him again the following weekend and we've been together ever since. It will be 5 years in March, and our first wedding anniversary is in November.  I definitely knew within the first three months that he was the one, but I had suspicions that he was the one after only a few dates. He's cute and he has an Irish accent, so I was head over heels pretty quickly.

My hubby and I met at one of my high school friends' birthday party. I was 17 and he was the deejay. We chatted and laughed and at midnight he put on a ballad and pulled me onto the dance floor to dance. Shortly after we kissed for the first time. My BFF's parents drove me home that night. When I got home I woke up my mom (it was the middle of the night) to tell her that I had just met the love of my life. She said "Oh no!" LOL

15 years later we tied the knot and overall it has been 19 years of loving bliss.

My ex-boyfriend actually set me up on a blind date with my H! I was good friends with this ex and he'd recently met my H through another friend. My ex said we were both driving him crazy because we'd each talk about how much we wanted to have babies and he was like, "How can I keep these two away from each other?" So he set us up and we went to the premier of a really bad independent film, which had one of H's friends starring in it. I wasn't so sure about H because he was 1). poorly dressed 2). barely taller than me (I like really tall men) 3). very geeky/socially awkward and 4). he LOVED the movie (it was soooooo bad). I went to dinner with his friends after the movie and kept thinking about how I was going to say, "Thanks, but no thanks" to future dates with this guy. But then we started talking and I found out we were both gluten-free and he kept talking about all the delicious dishes he makes. He got me hooked when he said something about a cashew butter coconut curry so there was a second date (I mean, I HAD to try this curry). Over time he really grew on me. I helped him dress better (seriously, he was wearing shirts 2 sizes too large and all in beige tones) and the socially awkward stuff faded as he became more comfortable with me (but of course the geeky will never go away completely because he's a scientist after all :-)

There were several moments when I knew he was for real. I think the first was when he dressed from head to toe in orange (including orange tights!) to play the character of the "Friendly Shrimp" in my underwater dance show (he had speaking lines as well). That was a truly unforgettable moment. And the second was one when he led an audience participation fitness routine as Richard Simmons (he has his exact hair!) in a time travel show. Yes, he danced in front of a hundred people as Richard Simmons (in neon short shorts). The fact that he can be so smart and intelligent and serious one minute, and then so playful and silly and open to anything the next really won my heart. Oh, and the fact that he can fix anything and everything (yay for the scientist mind!). In fact, one time I was struggling with my hard-drive, which refused to work, and I tossed it on my bed and said, "If you can get this to work, I'll marry you!" An hour later it was working and he was like, "I guess I better go ring shopping?"

We've been together for 3 years and just celebrated our first wedding anniversary on 8/30.  :x

I met my wife at a bar (a real dive), and I actually hit on her!  Which is to say, I had never before (or since) picked someone up at a bar like that.  But she was awfully cute.

That was a little over 3 years ago.  We've been married for a year and a half.  I figured out that she was the one for me when she was showing me pictures of her garden and her dog, on our second or third date, and she talked about all the things she could cook!  And then she made me pancakes. 

So yes, she won me over with garden tomatoes and apple pancakes.  It took her a bit longer to decide that I was the one for her, but I didn't mind being patient.

Lol... my DH and I were our friends "wingman" on their date. We like each other and had great conversations. Kept in touch for a little bit after that, but he was just getting out of a relationship. He wasn't sure if they were getting back together or not so we kind of didn't talk for months. He texts me out of the blue almost a year later and we have been together ever since. That was seven years ago. We moved pretty fast. Lol... the first time he came over, he never left. We were pregnant with our first shortly after.

I met my husband online in January of 2013, 6 weeks after I moved to a new city. I think I broke the ice, but his first email to me was so interesting and asked great questions instead of just "sup?". We met a few days later for coffee, which turned into lunch, which turned into dinner, which turned into kissing me goodnight and making out like teenagers in his truck! LOL Our first date was 11 hours long! 

I think we both pretty much knew right away. We lived 40 mins away from each other for the first 6 months, so when I moved to where he lived for a new job, we moved in together, even though I started out looking for my own place! We got engaged that Christmas and married almost a year ago! He is 100% the perfect guy for me, and worth waiting almost 35 years for!

My husband and I were introduced 13 years ago by my childhood friend.  She worked with him and really didn't like the man I was with (for 8 years!!)  We would run into each other every now and then and in 2006, he caught me when I was single.  We stayed up all night talking at a party and fell asleep holding hands.  I asked him out the next morning.  He asked me to move in 2 months later.  We have been married 7 years in November!  He's not only the love of my life but my best friend.

My fiancé and I met nearly 4 years ago, in a college drawing class. I was separated and going through a divorce at the time and was not looking for a romantic connection with him or anyone! I was even "warned" by the freaking professor to "stay away from him" because he had been in a previous term and was "a player"...HAHAHAAAA!
I'm literally 8.5 years older than my man and a mother of 4, so that only made me laugh! I really didn't even expect for us to become friends...but we did, and we quickly became best friends.
I even "was there for him" when he dated a few girls, and the whole time I kept thinking "This won't last and we will be together." I was right. He moved in a year later and we've officially been together almost 3 years. Engaged now for 9 whole days! We've been through 3 losses during these years and I just know in my heart that we have what it takes to make it. I believe in soul mates and I knew pretty early on he was my mate for life.

I met my DH online also. I had previously been in a 7 year relationship that ended horribly. I picked myself up and began dating. Still can't believe I did it.

We definitely fell for each other hard and fast. We've now been married over 3 years.

My husband and I met 5 years ago this month. We were introduced by a former coworker/friend of mine. I only worked with this person about a year, but we stayed in touch with emails and had lunch every now and then after I left for another job.

One day she emailed me and asked if I'd be interested in meeting her husband's best friend. I said sure. We met up for a double date. I don't think either of us were sure if we wanted to see each other again after the first date, but he later told me he knew he had to give it another shot. I agreed to a second date and then more.

It took him about 5 dates, and I could tell he was getting serious, which scared the crap out of me. So, I broke up with him. I spent a miserable 3 weeks without him. Then he called and we tried it again. It took me about 3 months, but then I knew this was it. We were engaged a year after meeting, and we got married 8 months after that. It's been 3 1/2 years of marriage. I couldn't imagine making this journey through life with anyone else.

I love these stories too!!  I also met my hubby online.  We met at a bar after talking on the phone a few times.  We sat on the patio and drank wine and I had a suspicion he could be the one when I actually wanted to hear from him again (had been a while since I'd felt that way on a first date!).  We got engaged 7 months later, married 7 months after that, and had our DD right before our one year wedding anniversary.  We moved pretty fast - lots of changes for some old single people, but we're doing pretty darn well!  This infertility battle has brought us closer, and I know that's not always the case.  I'm really lucky to have a really calm, chill guy who takes my mood swings in stride!!

I'm enjoying reading all of your stories. DH and I met through friends almost 10 years ago. No one was trying to set us up, but DH was uncharacteristically forward and there was a major physical attraction and immediate mental connection. Within a month we were dating exclusively. He's my best friend and an amazing life partner. He's going to be a great dad.

Another one who met at a bar! We met when we were recruited to the same trivia team. When we started dating, he told me he was looking for a woman he wouldn't "intellectually dominate." I promised him he'd never have that problem with me. (If you haven't met him, this story kind of makes him sound like an a**hole, but he really is a sweetheart.)

My DH and I met online in a game called Second Life.  We were arguing over how to pronounce 'aluminum'.  That was back in July 2008.  I went to Scotland to meet him that Thanksgiving and then stayed with him and his family that summer because I was still on a teacher's schedule back then.  He then came over in October 2009 and we ended up getting married on my birthday.  We've yet to go back to Scotland.  I think we knew we could be the one for each other a few weeks after talking, skyping, falling asleep with headsets on, etc.  It wasn't until we met that Thanksgiving that we knew we had to make it work somehow.  My friends think it was something like the movie "The Holiday".. yes it was a cottage, yes, he was British, but that's about it in similarities.  I tried to move over there but there but I made way more money over here.  DH now has his citizenship and has slowly begun to lose his accent.  I really only hear it when he's super tired or after a bit of drinking...haha

I met my DH on match. I was about to give up on the site and he just signed up. On our 1st date we were both hung over he was at a Halloween party and I was at a bachlorette party the night before. We met downtown and went to a restaurant for appetizers. Then walked around the park downtown and talked. After that we went to play put put and had dinner. I knew he was the one in the 1st mth. We've been together 4 years and of this mth and celebrated our 2nd wedding anniversary last mth

@Piperella I can't believe you met in Second Life! I used to do work for a marketing firm that held staff meetings in SL. I was really useless at it. The best I could do was finding the portal thing to get to our conference room. And my boss had to get me an outfit so I could come to meetings with clothes on.

@MynaBird Oh that's hysterical!  We still actually play on there to talk to our friends that have become real life friends.  If you ever have to get back on SL i'll dress you up in the best outfits!

@carrieandroy I think it's just because they must think they have fancy pants on when they are from across the pond.  We still argue about how to pronounce different words even now.  We usually end the fights going, "Our poor confused child..."  Gives us a good giggle.

My partner and i lived in the same community (its very very small). We had (still have!) a lot of common interests and got to know each other while cross country skiing, running and hiking. Never really had a first real date -- just lots of skis and runs. We have been together about 17 yrs.
