Excess Amniotic Fluid

I'm 28 weeks and at my ultrasound today they discovered I was on the high end of normal as far as the amount of amniotic fluid. Said nothing to worry about, I passed my glucose test, iron is good, weight is good just have to go back in 4 weeks for another ultrasound then every week after that because I'm at a higher risk now for pre-term labor. Of course I did the wrong thing and googled it so now I'm freaked out. The causes according to the Internet are birth defects, downs, kidney issues, etc... I've had all the genetic testing and everything was at low risk and his kidneys are functioning. Anyone else experienced this to help ease my worries?

  • No experience, but definitely praying for you and LO. I'm so sorry.

  • Do not google!!!! It can be a numerous of reasons, I had that experience and the only thing I will say faith and lots of prayers.
  • Hello! I have excess fluid, too. I'm 25 weeks, due January 9, but I hang out on this board too. I was told I have polyhydramnios at 21 weeks and I'm supposed to avoid heavy lifting, sex and exercise. They check it every 3 weeks. Last time there was no change. We're still not sure what's causing mine but they better figure it out soon because the worrying (and googling) is driving me crazy.
  • I had an ultrasound today and have the same thing. I also went home and googled. Bad decision. I'm trying to stay positive. I also had all genetic testing done early on, and all looked good. I'm a nervous wreck now because there are so many unknowns. I go back for weekly ultrasounds from now on. My doctor thinks it's a placenta issue, and talked about preterm labor. Now google has me all scared and worried.

  • Amniotic fluid is not the same as fluid retention or edema throughout your body. No amount of water or juice is going to reduce your amniotic fluid.

  • I was also told that my fluid was on the high end of normal and I was consistently measuring 1-2 weeks ahead at my biweekly appointments. I went in yesterday for a growth scan and found my fluid levels to be perfectly normal (tech said they weren't even borderline) but baby was measuring on the larger side. Even if it's high, it could still be considered normal. I did the exact same as you and googled and scared the the day lights out of myself. It's most likely perfectly fine!

  • I had mild polyhydramnios with my first DD, it wasn't discovered until my due date. At that point it was obv too late to monitor or do anything about it but I was told by 4 different people (midwife, OB, 2 residents) that if my water broke on its own I was go to the hospital ASAP, no waiting for DH to get home. I lived literally 2 blocks from the hospital and DH was home when my water broke so I didn't call an ambulance like they wanted me to. I was also told that if I felt a cord coming out I was to get down on the floor, put my forehead on the floor and butt in the air and stay like that till an ambulance showed up but I didn't feel anything so I didn't have to do that. In the end, DD was born healthy and there were no issues so I would just continue monitoring it like you are and stay positive.
