Group b strep test-positive result

just got a call from dr after blood work results came back saying I needed to be put on amoxicillin for group b strep bc it was found in my urine. I'm only 7 weeks. Is this bad news?

Re: Group b strep test-positive result

  • They need to test you again closer to delivery. Just because you have it now doesn't mean you will have it then. And if you do end up testing positive at the end (around 36 weeks they usually run it) then you'll just have to have IV antibiotics in labor prior to delivery.

  • Towards the end of my pregnancy (35-36 weeks) with DS the OB swabbed me and found I tested positive as well. No big deal, if I would have had a natural birth they would have given me IV antibotics before birth.

  • I had the exact same situation when I was pregnant with my second daughter. I was confused because I thought they tested for Group B with a swab later in pregnancy. The nurse called me after a urine test very early on. I actually had a UTI, but didn't know it. My doctor didn't re-test later on. They just treated me as if I were Group B Strep positive when I delivered and administered IV antibiotics as soon as I got to the hospital to deliver my baby. It was no big thing.

  • I was positive at the end of my pregnancy and they just did a round of antibiotics prior to delivery. I was freaked out at first but it didn't affect me, my labor or my son at all.

  • Basically it's really common for it to come and go in most women. Unless you're having a situation like @LizC216 this sounds pretty irrelevant as the moment unless there's something about group b strep colonization that's harmful in first tri. My midwives recommend taking a probiotic throughout pregnancy, particularly in 3rd tri, to try and prevent this situation if you're trying to avoid a routine IV and/or antibiotics. I'd ask your doctor some questions. Good luck!

  • It may seem alarming to hear that you have it but there's no reason to be overly concerned. It can come and go and you may never even know you have it. You can have it now and it may be gone by the time you deliver.
