Before I was pregnant....

Before I was pregnant I used to hear those "I didn't know I was pregnant" stories and think "Wow, these people are really out of it."  Now that I'm pregnant- I kind of get it (at least in the beginning weeks).  I'm honestly bleeding more now than I ever would have during a typical period. (I've been to the doctor, they assure me this is normal.) I also really don't have any pregnancy symptoms.  I feel like I owe some of those "I didn't know I was pregnant" women apologies! I get it now.

Anyone else have an "oh I totally understand this now!" moment once they became pregnant?

Re: Before I was pregnant....

  • I had no idea how worried I'd be about miscarriage when I got pregnant. I used to be one of those people who would look at 'neurotic' moms (or what I thought were) and say, "Oh come on, people have been pregnant and giving birth for years...my mom smoked and drank occasionally when she was pregnant with my sister and me...you don't REALLY have to avoid all this stuff, c'mon."

I want to slap that me in the face. Hard.

A friend just said that to me the other day about drinking while pregnant-- "Plenty of people drink occasionally and their kids have turned out FINE." We were discussing my abstaining from alcohol during my birthday weekend- which honestly is fine with me- I've little desire to drink at all.

But I had to tell her, "Listen, I am so scared of something going wrong that I'm not going to jeopardize it. Not to mention that right now it doesn't seem to be a huge sacrifice. Maybe in my second trimester I'll have a glass of wine on a special occasion, but I feel that right now it's too little!!"

So long-winded story short: Yes. I totally get why women abstain from all these things- we're terrified and want the best chance for our babies! Sorry to all the pregnant women/friends I thought were 'crazy'.

Yes, this! I am obsessed with something going wrong and wanting to make sure I don't do anything to jeopardize things. So if it's something I can control (alcohol intake, getting hair color applied to my scalp in the first trimester etc), I'm extremely paranoid. It's funny but if another woman told me that SHE did all those things, I'd still 100% think she was doing the right thing. However, it doesn't feel right for me, even if there is no basis. Also, I can't imagine wanting to drink alcohol right now. Blech.
