Mattress....probably a silly question but...

So while doing my registry I noticed that crib mattresses were like $300+ dollars. Then I saw that some were only $40 bucks and then some were in the mid range like $150 ish. How did YOU ladies go about picking a mattress? Even the baby bargains book selected the mid priced one. What did you look for in the mattress when you went to pick it? What has been your experience? I saw that the mattress you pick has an effect on reducing the babies chances of SIDS. I'm still researching about SIDS personally,  but what tips can you ladies give to FTMs trying to select the right mattress? Thank you for all of your help in advance.

This is the mattress we got for DS and intend to get for Bun. Honestly, price was a big factor for us and still is. For SIDS I looked for something firm and durable. I also liked the low chemical emissions with this one and that it can easily be wiped down if it gets wet or dirty. Then we got inexpensive mattress protectors at Target that fit like a fitted sheet and put a fitted sheet over it.

DS has been comfortable and liked the mattress and it really isn't showing any wear so will be following him to his toddler bed (another perk in my opinion).

I hope that helps some. I still find mattresses overwhelming to shop for. One thing I did consider is I know some foam mattresses can retain body heat or can dip and be harder to roll out of. I'm not sure if this is the same with all mattresses or if it matters with a crib mattress but it's why I decided on an inner spring mattress.

  • This was the hardest thing for me to decide on because there were so many variables. I started with what attributes were most important to me - something with dual-sides, has natural components (non-toxic emissions) and didn't cost more than the crib. I then went to the local big box store and asked the associate to walk me thru the different choices and essentially "try them out". I also looked at the amazon reviews just to see what other moms were saying. I ended up getting a Simmons Kids beauty rest for my son, which I have no complaints about. They don't make this particular model anymore but they have something similar that I'll probably get.

Personally I don't know anyone who bought a $300+ mattress... they may have favorable attributes but there's a scare factor to the price. I think a mid price mattress is a good way to go. I would just recommend getting it early so you can let it breathe before baby has to sleep on it.
  • We went mid-range, ours was around 100-150. But baby won't be in the crib for awhile, we have a halo bassinet next to the bed. Price was a factor, but all the ones we looked at seemed the same.
  • @Maiatene yeah I thought $300 was pretty crazy.

  • Firm and foam core instead of coils. Also, the one that we got only weighs 7 lbs:

  • I would also look for something waterproof. We got the Sealy Signature Prestige (only $100). I had a few friends recommend it and it has great reviews. we will still use a mattress pad, but incase anything leaks through to the mattress it can easily be wiped down.
  • That was one of the biggest things that stressed me out the first time. I looked for firmness, low chemicals, more natural ingredients and versatility. I looked at ratings at Consumer Reports and also Lucie's List. I did see one for $60 that had amazing reviews but i went with mid range - ours was $190 - better constructed overall. I had actually gotten one from BBB but when we put it in our crib there was too much space between the rail and the mattress - so I got paranoid that baby would get stuck. This one fit perfectly. It's the Moonlight Slumber Little Dreamer - and it has two sides - one for toddler and one for baby. One thing to consider is coil vs foam mattress - I went with foam because it's a LOT lighter and much easier to change sheets especially in the middle of the night.

Yeah... they can get a $300 crib when they get a job and can pay for it themselves lol

Seriously lol. We paid $100 for baby's crib that transitions to toddler bed and the Serta mattress together. Both unused by a friend. $300 is ridiculous IMO.
  • We went with Colgate because it's the only American made infant mattress and the research we did showed they were the best. We got a mid range model about $175 it had a decent gauge on the coils so they weren't like shredded aluminum can gauge

  • I went with the mattress that was the same company as my crib. I got the Highland DaVinci crib and got the mid ranged mattress from them as well. It was 150$. I trusted the store manager where I bought it from (Lussobaby) because she said the best mattress to get is the one that is perfect for your crib. I know it is two-sided and hypoallergenic. One side is made for infant and the other is more comfortable for toddler. It has 260 coils and 15.5 gauge, which is what babycenter recommended.
  • Honestly your hest bet is to read the reviews. Thats what we did for our first lo and found the mattress that we decided on at burlington for $45. It worked great for 2 kids. We will be replacing for this little one. You definatly want something firm and waterproof. As long as your mattress is firm and fits snuggly in the crib you should have no problem with sids. We switched to a softer mattress when our first was 18 months and used the firm for our 2nd.
  • After reading the baby bargains book we decided on a foam mattress. Wound up getting a Sealy soybean foam mattress. Really couldn't beat the price - something like $110 on Amazon and it's not perfectly organic, but lower chemicals than other brands. Also - agree with PP about the weight. It's super light!
  • I also used the BB book. We wanted a firm foam mattress. Eventually decided on the Moonlight Slumber Little Dreamer! It is 'Vinyl, polyethylene and PVC free, phthalates and lead free, non-toxic waterproof' https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00P9RB0OE?tag=blvisitor-20#productDetails

we're still getting two waterproof mattress covers to stack on top of each other on the mattress under the sheet for accidents-- i remember someone saying you could easily remove the top layer and put a sheet down over the bottom mattress cover & whisk baby back to sleep!

I guess I'll chime in here as one of the ridiculous moms who spent $300 on the crib mattress.

We went with the "Naturepedic No Compromise Organic Cotton Classic 150 Seamless Dual Firmness Crib Mattress." Our rationale was that the baby is going to spend a LOT of time in the crib (and then toddler bed) over the next 3-4 years so the extra expense to get a chemical-free mattress made sense to us. We also aren't getting some of the other stuff like a swing and a bassinet so I figure our net cost is about the same overall. I also have a close friend who lost her baby to SIDS so I am probably in the "super over-cautious" camp when it comes to the bed decisions.

With our first we went with the Colgate Classica II which was foam, mid-range and highly recommended by the Baby Bargains book. That mattress was fine and we didn't have any issues but I did buy it early and took it out of the plastic right away so it had several months to "air out" - for comparison, the naturepedic had no smell at all right out of the plastic.

Whatever one you decide to go with will be fine- I know it's stressful trying to figure it all out. Good luck :)

We're also going to purchase a naturepedic organic mattress. When I was younger a couple in our church lost their daughter to SIDS during a nap. It was so horrible and sad, it left quite an impression. So I may be a paranoid sucker, but I'm absolutely going to spend whatever it takes to have the lowest level of chemical emissions and safest materials possible. By my thinking, I'm buying a little extra peace of mind.

  • @altima703  @Elizabella85  I don't think there is anything wrong with purchasing something that want/need and can afford, especially for safety reasons. I just couldn't understand why anyone would CHARGE that much for a baby mattress. I couldn't rationalize it in my mind. So I totally apologize if either of you were offended by this post or my comments. That wasn't my intention at all. I just really was shocked that BBB had a mattress for sale at $379.99 and that was the FIRST one they showed you. But if you go on line and research the price range of baby mattresses are from like $20.00-$400.00. You get what you pay for, but the price range still trips me out.

  • I'm not there yet but already picked out the "Royal Pedic," because only the best will do for my baby.

Oh no no no!! Not offended at all!!! I agree it's an outrageous price for such a small mattress. I was just explaining my reasoning behind that kind of purchase. I do feel a bit ridiculous paying that kind of money, and maybe I'm totally being suckered by organic/green claims, but I'll never forget that little baby girl. She would have been 18 this year. So my DH told me to get whatever let me peacefully put our own baby girl to sleep at night.

If I hadn't known that family, then I'd probably think that anyone who paid that much was out of their minds. My own dad is a sweetheart, but he thinks we're nuts too. To each their own, and I will slightly envy those who have the extra money in their pockets. LOL
