GTKY: Books

I don't know if there is any rule to posting these things, so I hope I'm not doing something wrong by doing so.

So, books.....

Here is the blank one:

Are you going to start building your baby a library?

Do you plan on including any books from your childhood and if so which ones?

Got any books yet?

Are you going to start building your baby a library? Already started

Do you plan on including any books from your childhood and if so which ones?
Bernstein Bears
Aesop's Fables
Clifford the Big Red Dog
Little Golden Books
Little House on the Prairie  (I know it will be awhile before they can be read, but I buy them when I find them)

Got any books yet?  Several.  I look in the kids' book section every time we go to the Good Will or a thrift shop.

Re: GTKY: Books

  • If I can give any advice, get as many books as you possibly can! My son LOVES books and there are only so many times I can read The Pokey Little Puppy!

That said, this pumpkin is going to come into quite the extensive library already. Mostly Thomas the Tank Engine books (when you have a 2yr old boy, it is like hardwired in their DNA somehow!), but lots of animal books too.

We also have these incredible books by Jeffrey Brown called "Goodnight Darth Vader" and "Vader and Son". He also wrote "Vader's Little Princess" so if this one is a girl...

You can't go wrong with classics like Where's Spot?, Curious George, Little Golden Books, Dr. Seuss, etc. Just be careful of pop up books because my son liked to rip them to shreds.

Have a good mix of board books and paper pages. Those will likely be for Mama or Dada to read until they get better fine motor skills. But my guy loved "reading" those board books all by himself from age 6months. And he loves reading to the cat so I am thinking this little pumpkin will be read to by big bro 24/7.

I am so glad you made this thread because people are always shocked when they hear my son speak. Physically he is a bit of a peanut and looks like he was a preemie, which he was. But...(Mommy brag warning!) his pedi says he has the vocabulary of a 4yr old and he frequently uses complex phrases like "If you look over there, you can see the car go up the hill, Mama!" I had no answer when people would ask why he was able to do that until I started sorting all his books. We have at least a hundred! Between me constantly reading to him and his own independent love of books, his vocab has skyrocketed! So, even if you are not a big reader, read to your kids. It makes a huge difference!

Oh, and PS- we watch at least one show of TV everyday while getting ready in the morning and a movie (usually Thomas or Cars) every Friday night or more often if Mama is tired, he was only BF for 4 months, and I definitely didn't follow all the rules while pregnant with him so just putting that out there...

  • We have lots of books from our first 2. But if this is your first, see if whoever throws your baby shower will put a request on invitations for people to bring their favorite childhood book to start "Baby So-and-so's" library. We ended up with a couple duplicates, but dispersed them to grandparents and cars and diaper bags, etc.

My favorite childhood book is called Bendamolina (the cat who wore a pot on her head). It's hard to find, but it's a cute story.

We have so many books already that DS and baby can share (though I have books I want to add to the collection).
For the past few months, DS's favorites have been Harry the Dirty Dog, Strega Nona, Chicka Chicka Boom Boom, Sleepy Dog, Little Bunny Follows His Nose, and Hey Diddle Diddle (nursery rhymes). We have read these ones ragged.
One thing my mom did to build a collection for our home quickly was to suggest that people get a book--new or used-- instead of a card for the baby shower. People wrote such great messages in them and were excited to share their favorite books.

Edit because words are hard this morning.
  • We already have plenty of books from the boys. Love board books and I agree with pp about being careful with pop up books. I also started reading to them in utero. DS1's favorite books are the Giving Tree and any Sandra Boyton book.

  • We have a huge library for our 2 year old and we are already adding to it for our new baby! We are so excited!
  • We have a crap ton of books. I have some really nice books put up but my son has a huge cardboard book collection that he loves. It warms my heart that he loves reading books with me so much :) His favorites are Spot books, Thomas books, and we have a decent collection of Eric Carle books.

  • Are you going to start building your baby a library? Yup :)

Do you plan on including any books from your childhood and if so which ones? Dr. Seuss, Little Golden Books, and tons of others I can't even think of.

Got any books yet? DH and I found a Golden Books set of the Star Wars movies so of course we had to get it, us being giant nerds and all.

That sounds awesome! I'll have to look for those! I kind of hope this baby has a May 4th birthday because of Star Wars. DS was born at 39+1, so it's possible for me with a May 10th due date... :)
  • I definitely want to build a big library. I've got this pie-in-the-sky goal that LO will not know what a screen is for as long as I can help it. I was a voracious reader when I was kid (still am, when I'm not on &%$*ing iPad, which I hate, but am addicted to, btw) and hope this LO will be, also.

Didn't really look around but it's possible you may be able to find them somewhere else cheaper.

We are total book nerds here. We even had a library themed wedding. AND I work with children for a living. Needless to say, lots of kids books here already. Most are not infant/toddler safe (ie, paper pages and such.) Even when we were still dating and newly wed, we always talked about reading to our kids. In fact, when I bring home new picture books, my husband reads them to our cat in his best story telling voice. At least, when she's obliging, haha.

I couldn't begin to list all the kids books we have. We have most of the baby lit board books (counting and shapes and such, each set to classics like Jane Eyre and Jungle Book and Sherlock Holmes with adorable illustrations). Beatrix Potter. Golden Books. Collections of fables and fairy tales, especially vintage ones with great illustrations. Lots of classics for when they are older too-- the Oz books, Winnie the Pooh, Peter Pan, Princess and the Goblin, Secret Garden. More recent favorites like Harry Potter, Wrinkle in Time (and sequels), Enders Game, The Giver, etc. Plus assorted chapter books and picture books that I've picked up here and there. And the Star Wars books mentioned-- my husband is a total geek (as in Star Wars and comic books, beyond my book addiction-- my husband would die of happiness if Speck arrives on the 4th.)

I probably won't buy board books for myself yet unless there's amazing unsurpassable deals, at least until after we have a baby shower. After that-- let the floodgates open! I am definitely getting the indestructibles books so Speck can start feeling books in his or her hands and, as I suspect, getting a literal taste for books early on.
  • We signed DD up for Dolly Parton's Imagination something or other where she gets free books sent to her until she's 5. I have a huge library for her. So I'll be passing them along to this LO too.

DD's favorite books are the Llama Llama books and thinks The Napping House is absolutely hilarious

DD born 2013 (our miracle "you can't have babies" baby!)

  • We have so so many books, and we just keep adding more. For baby/toddler both of my kids really like(d) lift the flap books, especially the Usborne ones. Also the melodic rhyming of the Llama Llama books makes them a hit with younger kids. For the 2-3-4 age range a few favorites here are:
    The Garuffalo
    The Higheay Rat
    Not in this House
    Goodnight Goodnight Construction Site
    Otis the tractor books
    The Amazing Book Eating Boy

That's all my addled brain can remember at the moment.

  • I have Vaders little princess for my DD. I love that book.
  • I didn't start a library before DS, but we have been building his up.

I would suggest lots of board books - he loves carrying his books around and looking at them, but will tear the crap out of any real pages (15 months old).

Also, I would add to any list, a few "peekaboo" books, and definitely some "touch and feel" books.  Those are a big hit between 12-18 months (maybe beyond?)

  • Oh my toddler LOVES lift the flap.  Esp. Usborne lift the flap.
I loved Playful Parenting for a different spin on how to approach things than I would normally have.  It has already came in handy :)
