3rd Trimester

Much Needed Advise!!!!

I would like to start off by saying my Dr isn't exactly helping or answering my questions in any way.

During my first pregnancy, I was admitted into the hospital on bed rest for medical reasons. Was in there for a full week hooked up to monitors and all that fun stuff. I was having contractions the entire time and didn't feel a single one. It wasn't until the morning I went into labor that my stomach started hurting and the nurse accidentally broke my water checking me. My stomach hurting was my body saying it was time.

Last week, I thought I might have been going into labor but it passed. The next day at my appointment, my Dr checked me and said I was 1-2 cm dilated and scheduled me for a non-stress test that weekend. I passed but the nurse said I was having contractions. Didn't feel a single one of them.

So on Tues I asked my Dr about them because we have a scheduled c-section (for medical reasons) and am worried if I go into labor before the date.

The baby has already dropped and has been for almost two weeks now (it's more and more noticeable each day) I'm already dilated (though idk how much since she checked me a week ago) and for the last three days I've had a stomach ache. If I place my hand on my stomach, I can feel everything tighten. My problem is I can't keep a hand on my stomach for over an hour to count the contractions.

When I told my Dr about the stomach pains she dismissed it as "normal pregnancy pains" despite me telling her that was how my labor started with my first one. I asked her how would I know to go to the hospital and she told me when the stomach pains are 10 mins apart. I told her the stomach pain is continuous and she shook her head at me. She basically told me to go when I felt the contractions when I told her I don't feel them!

My husband had me call the hospital and tell them what was going on yesterday after the days and the nurse in labor and delivery told me not to worry about coming in until I had painful contractions. When I told her I don't feel any pain in the contractions she said that she would leave the decision to me if I needed to come in or not. It's impossible to get any sort of answer out of these Dr's and Nurses!!!

  • Is there anyone else in the practice to talk to? Other than that, the only thing I can think of is to call or go to L&D to see what they think or to speak to your practice's office manager about how you feel like you're not being taken seriously.

I'm sorry, wish I could be more help.

  • It's very common to have lots of contractions and dilate early. I have with 2/3 kids. Walking around for 3-4 weeks up to 4cm dilated. If it's real labor contractions you will feel them. They can be mild and barely noticeable in the beginning (ie: your last labor) but as labor progresses it hurts you will feel them. Most women is their belly, some their back, for me as it progressed I feel in my belly and thighs... But you will feel them! But you know your body better than anyone. If you think you are in labor go to the hospital. No harm in that, if you aren't they will simply send you home. Good luck!
  • I never felt any contractions in my last pregnancy though. The stomach pain was continuous for several hours even when there wasn't a contraction.
  • Maybe I'm reading this wrong, but it sort of sounds like you're worried that you won't feel any contractions, ever, and suddenly a baby will fall out from between your legs.

I think this is highly unlikely.

My honest advice is to try to relax and stay off your feet as much as possible until it's time for your c-section.  And what kind of stomach pain are we talk about?  Nausea?  Cramping?

  • When did you know to go in for your last pregnancy?  Maybe that should be your guide?  The statement that "you'll just know" when you go into active labor is simply not true for everyone.  I had no idea I was in active labor.  I had been having painless BH for months, but I called L&D after a few hours of consistent painless contractions, and they said to wait at least another hour and call back because everything was still painless.  My mom insisted I go to the hospital anyways because of the frequency of contractions, and it turns out she was right.  I was definitely in labor, and by the time we got to the hospital (after a 15 minute car ride), I practically had to be carried to the delivery room I was in so much pain.  Had my baby very shortly thereafter.  So for this pregnancy, my deciding factor is going to be consistent and frequent painless contractions for a number of hours.

My point is that I would go to the hospital and get checked even if you call and they tell you you don't sound like you're in enough pain yet, because you had painless active labor contractions last time.
