Miscarriage/Pregnancy Loss

MTHFR

just found out yesterday that I have MTHFR. 2 mutations. I'm not sure how I feel. I'm happy that we know why now but also thing wth of course something is wrong with me. The dr has put me on TL Gard and NeevoDHA plus the baby aspirin I was already taking. Any one with expierence that could share their story? I've heard about lovenex but she said that's her last resort because of the side effects. Thank you!

I am heterozygous for MTHFR C677T. I also was diagnosed with PAI-1 4G/4G which is a clotting disorder as well. My doctor is putting me on Lovenox, baby aspirin and progesterone for the next time we try and I also have to take Metanx which is Folate since my body can't break down Folic Acid due to the MTHFR. My hematologist and fertility specialist said that Lovenox is essentially harmless unless you have a another type of bleeding disorder like Von Williebrand disease.

  • Hi, I have factor 5 which is a clotting disorder. My last pregnancy I was on lovenox daily then switched to heparin 3 times a day at 36 weeks. Lovenox lasts 24 hours but heparin lasts about 8 hours. The switch was made due to the possibility of labor. I had no problems what so ever with the lovenox besides some bruises on my belly. This pregnancy I had a miscarriage before I started the lovenox. My midwife also recommended a baby aspirin when I can start trying to conceive again.
I'm not saying you should go on lovenox if not recommended by your doctor, but I don't want you to too scared of it if it becomes the next step for you. Sorry for you losses and hoping for special rainbow babies for you both.
  • Thank you both!
  • No problem! Good luck!

  • Hi! Would you mind telling me what is the exact lab test that you had to diagnose the clotting disorders that you mention? I have has 2 successive pregnancies ending in miscarriage at exactly 7 weeks, with subchorionic hematoma, and I am suspecting a clotting disorder. My doctor is only doing tests for anticardiolipin and lupus anticosgulant. Thanks!
  • I am out of town and the papers are at home but it was a panel of blood tests. It also tested for the 2 you mentioned. Dr said most blood clotting disorders cause mc between 8-10 weeks. Since I was just a couple days off she suspected MTHFR and was correct.
  • I have heterozygous mthfr as well(one affecting metabolization of folic acid + clotting issue). I was diagnosed after two consecutive mc. I was put on 4xs the normal amount of folic acid and baby aspirin. I am now almost 14 wks pg and so far things look great. It seems to be fairly easy to resolve all things considered so I was just thankful to have some answers and some hope. I wish you the best of luck and I'll be happy to answer any questions you may have.
  • Well it looks like I may be pregnant again after the loss 5 weeks ago. I took a test last week that was clearly negative and yesterday and today were faint positives. Calling the dr today. I have both mutations also. Praying this is our rainbow baby!! Congrats to you!
  • Hi. I was wondering if both your losses were empty sacs or did they have a heartbeat. Ive had 3 mc with all empty sacs. Never seems to form. They will discuss labs with me friday but over the phone last night they mentioned heterozygous mthfr:( i also need to get genetic trsting to see if that is why nothing is forming. I pray its not genetic. Is the hereozygous common or do lots of woman go through this and have children?
  • I didn't see the hb the first time but there was one. I was 7 weeks 5 days when the baby passed. 2nd on I seen the hb at 7 weeks 2 days went back a week later for my first regular appt and baby passed again at 7 weeks 5 days. That's when doc knew some thing was wrong. My dr said mine is the most common mutation. I've been taking folic acid, b6 b12 a different kind of prenatal baby aspirin and I just started lovenox shots last night. Lots of women go on to healthy pregnacies once they are on the correct meds.
  • I also take progesterone.
  • Hi all,

I've been lurking on this page for a little while now...
I just recently experienced my first miscarriage. (baby had no heartbeat at 10weeks) And while I know miscarriage is common (unfortunately), I couldn't help but look at this thread. A long time ago I took the 23 and me genetic testing and I realized I was homozygous for A1298C but I'm ok with the C667T one. I kind of wanted to bring this up to my doctor at my follow up appointment next Friday, but I don't want her to think I'm crazy and I don't even know if she knows about this stuff? I have no idea how this mutation affects me?? I also know that I have a mutation that affects Vitamin D, but I knew about that years ago so I've always taken extra supplements. Can anyone please guide me in the right direction on next steps or if this a cause for concern?
  • I would def let your dr know! So you can be treated for it. So sorry for your loss.
  • Is it possible to have one of these conditions after having 3 full term pregnancies? My last pregnancy was over 7 years ago. I had my tubes "untied" last year and got pregnant in April/May and had a MMC in June at 7w3d. (I thought I was 9w3d). I got pregnant again in September/October and lost the baby again at 7w. I know my dr is going to do testing, which we will discuss at my follow up in 2 weeks. My question is if a clotting condition can occur after previous pregnancies?
  • Im not sure but I do have a friend who had 1 son then 3 mc. She found out she had mthfr and it helped get her twins. I think u have it or u dont and may not affect always? Thats just my thinking. But she is an example
  • It's very possible. Hopefully they tested you for it. It's a gene that we get from our parents that turns to a mutation. If you have it then any siblings should be tested. So sorry for your losses. Since the loss we found out we are expecting again. Before the first cycle. Oops. I am now on all the correct meds including lovenox shots everyday. We seen and heard the little heartbeat today! 6 weeks 2 days. As happy as I am it's still stressful. I just wanna get passed that 8 week mark and I think I will be a little less nervous.
  • I hear you on that! Congratulations and prayers that your pregnancy continues with no problems!!!
