Solids schedule

edited September 2015 in May 2015 Moms
hello! So, just another solids question. We've started cereal, and vegitables (starting with mixing them together). Right now we're only giving them to her in the evening. How often/much are others giving thier LO's solids? What is your plan for upping quantity? Feeding for breakfast or sending into daycare? Thanks for the info!

Re: Solids schedule

  • I won't start anything until she is 6m. At that point I'll do mostly BLW.

  • My baby is 6 months on the 25th and we just started doing solid regularly. We are only doing solids at dinner right now. I started with rice cereal for 3 days then moved onto vegetables. Once I go through all the age appropriate veggies, Ill move to fruit, still just once a day. Then after I get through fruit I will start sending some into daycare for one feeding a day. I didnt do any research on this I just decided thats what I felt comfortable with. I am not in a hurry for him to be eating alot of solids so this seemed to make the most sense to me.

  • We haven't started solids yet, but this chart seems pretty helpful.
  • I like the wholesome babyfood website.

I want baby to get used to sitting at the table for meals, so he will probably 'eat' 3 times a day pretty quickly. Once a day at 6 months, twice a day at 7 months, 3 times at 8 months, add a snack at 9 months and another snack at 10 months. The amount of food eaten at the beginning is really small.
  • We just started with cereal about a week and a half ago. For 2 days I did rice cereal in the morning, then introduced oatmeal and he was getting oatmeal in the AM and rice cereal in the PM. Just this weekend I gave him applesauce, about 1 tbsp in the morning with his oatmeal. Late this week/weekend I am going to switch to either pears or carrots. Then after that I will introduce something else, making sure to keep bringing back the first 2, etc.
  • We started at 4.5 months she just kept waking up and drinking bottles normally a once a night feeder turned into every 2 hours and she always seemed hungry so I stated with rice cereal but she hated it so we now do 8am bottle, 9am breakfast normally a fruit mixed with the cereal for iron Apple/banana/mango/pear I just cook/purée these and freeze them in 30ml ice blocks then 11am bottle 1pm lunch pumpkin/sweet potato/zucchini/carrot/cauliflower/ broccoli I normally offer two of these vegetable again about 30ml frozen blocks sometimes she eats the lit sometimes only half once she's had enough I stop then 2pm bottle 4:30 bottle 5 dinner meat or lentil mixed with a veggie it sometimes just veggies 6:45 bottle bed ... Found this routine is working well I know she's getting all her iron ect from the milk and she trying plenty of food :) she's now 5 months sleeps through every night :)
  • We do 3x a day. Either applesauce, squash or sweet potato with oatmeal cereal. At 3 months we started him sitting in his high hair at the table with us and talked to him while we ate our meals. I mix about 1.5 tablespoons of the fruit or veg with maybe a teaspoon of cereal. Sometimes he eats it all, sometimes not. I always give it to him about a half hour before I think he'll want to breastfeed. I never only give solids. I always let him keep his breastfeeding schedule. I know it's just for practice.
I let him keep eating till he fusses, refuses to open his mouth or finishes.
  • My daughter is 5 months on the 16th. She said since she is showing interest and advanced enough in musculoskeletal that she was comfortable with her starting solids. She said she herself started all of her kids at 4 months. We opted not to do rice cereal and went right to vegetables. We did it once a day at first but she began to love it quickly. We are doing two servings a day- one for breakfast and one for an early evening dinner. The doctor said this was totally fine as long as we limit her portions (1-2 Tbsp). Every baby is different but for us It's working out wonderfully!
  • we have been loosely following a food chart I found on Gerber, letting him lead me more then anything.  right now he eats a full tub of veggies ands fruits mixed with rice or oatmeal a day, along with breastmilk and formula. It seems like a lot, but his weight gain is right on track (16.6lbs at 4 months). And he always eats at least 4oz of milk, usually 6oz at each feeding. Daddy has a super high metibolism though, so i think DS got it from him.
  • We have started solids, but only give him them when we are home. My dad watches him during the day, and he isn't ready for that yet. On weekends we will give him breakfast (raspberries, blueberries, sometimes bread with peanut butter), lunch (bread with avocado, green beans, cheese, black beans, chicken) and dinner (pretty much same as lunch). In a month we will start having my dad feed him 2 meals. I plan on putting breakfast, lunch in separated containers and labeling it. I plan to up the quantity and take it more seriously somewhere between 6-8 months. At that time I will make sure each meal includes a veggie, fruit and protein.
