Cereal?

I've seen some folks post that they're skipping cereal when starting solids. As I approach starting solids with DS, I am researching the current evidence around foods and feeding. Where are folks getting this information? Are you giving your LO iron another way?

Thanks for sharing!

Re: Cereal?

  • I skipped cereal because she hates it. Doctor said it was fine because she is still breastfeeding but I also supplement two feedings a day with formula. That has iron in it too. Also certain veggies like spinach hace iron. Look up iron content in vegetables.
  • My son sees a nutritionist. They recommend rice cereal to help baby learn to eat solids. Give rice cereal if baby has looser stool and oatmeal if they need to loosen their stool.

  • I am giving my LO meat instead of baby cereal for his iron. My doctor said its what is recommended by the AAP
  • Our dr recommended starting with cereal, so that is why we elected to start with cereal. We do oatmeal and it has helped tremendously with LO's constipation issues. She went from struggling to go every other day at best to being able to go daily in her sleep.

With both of my other children I started meat pretty early, around 9 months. And I tried to pair it with food high in vitamin C. I used cereal to thicken purées or sometimes for breakfast.

Wholesome baby food has lots of info, including charts that I tend to follow.

  • Generally, anything in cereal that's nutritional has been added - cereals really have no nutrition to them, that's why they're fortified with stuff.  The same goes with any wheat products which is why you're not supposed to give young babies/toddlers a lot of bread so that they get enough good nutrients from breast/formula/other foods.
  • My ped recommended avocado. We got a list of fruits and veggies to try. She also recommended oats or barley over rice. (I'm staying away from rice entirely anyway, because of arsenic concerns.)

We haven't started solids yet though--he seems to be doing fine on breast milk and isn't showing too much interest in what we eat yet.
  • My little girl just turned 5 months old this week! We did oatmeal cereal for 2 weeks just to get her used to the spoon. We just fed her green beans today for lunch and she loved them!
