Every 2 hours

LO gets up during the night every 2 hours and I just about can't do it anymore. He's up at 12, 2, 4, 6, and 8 in the dot! He's 6 weeks old and has been doing this for over 2 weeks now. I've tried different swaddles, I change him every time, and we always try a bottle. Sometimes he drinks 4 ounces and sometimes it's only 1 ounce before he's back to sleep. I've even tried giving him more to eat right before bed but the most he sleeps is 3 hours straight. Does anyone have any ideas or suggestions to help this tired momma?

Honestly, ride it out. Its just his schedule. 6 weeks is growth spurt time. LOs couldve started early and sometimes they can be a couple days sometimes a couple weeks. Can your H or SO take the midnight feeding?? This would help a lot if you went to bed at a decent time still.

My son did this from 3.5 until almost 6 weeks. I thought it would kill me but over the last week he has given us a couple of decent stretches of 3.5-5 hours. It will get better but until then make it your mission to sleep whenever LO sleeps. During the worst part of Declan's poor sleep my house was a disaster, dishes were piled high and clean underwear was a valuable commodity but we got through it. Stay strong momma, it's just a phase!!

Unfortunately, some babies just don't sleep well. This sounds exactly like my DS and it didn't get better until around the 1 year mark.

This was my first and unfortunately it wasn't just a phase for me it was his schedule.  He did it until he was 4 months old.  My advice to you is to find someone, a sitter or a relative, who can come over a few times a week so that you can rest or shower or eat even.  If you do all the night time feeds it can be a big help to have DH do them or at least some of them on the weekend.  DH was living and working OOT until DS1 was 5 months old so he did all the MOTN stuff on Saturdays when he came home.  Just one night a week of good sleep made it possible to start over the next. 

When he stops eating after one ounce is it because he falls asleep? I always take off his swaddle and wait to change the diaper until after some of the bottle is gone.  Usually after 2 or 3 ounces LO gets sleepy so I burp him and change him then to wake him up, then I reswaddle him.  It keeps him awake enough to eat a full meal and prevents him from waking after 30 minutes to finish up.

Glad to know that I'm not alone. I'm starting to think he's just a cat napper. He's fighting his naps every day too. I have to take him on a car ride or on a walk in the stroller to get him to stop crying and fall asleep.

I'm going to try and see if I can get DH to help. So far, he has only gotten up once in the night to give the baby a bottle. But something has to change once I go back to work.

I feel for you. My son got up every hour on the hour for a week straight. It was exhausting. Thankfully, my husband and I have a system: I am exclusively breastfeeding, so my husband changes the baby and brings him to me so I can feed him.

We are in the same boat. Not only is he up at least every two hours to eat but there are some nights where every time you lay him down he is up fussing and crying right away. I feel like I am going to go crazy at night! I try to remember that he was only 4lbs 9oz at birth (born @ 38 wks) so at five weeks we are somewhere in the 7-8lb range which is the size of a normal newborn. I am just trying to be patient and know (praying) that it is a phase that will end sometime before 2-3 months!

I agree some kids just aren't great sleepers. My older daughter was up 3-4 times a night till around 14 months old. I was a complete zombie by then. This one has already had a couple nights that she's only gotten up once and she's just over 6 weeks old. We haven't done anything different. Just different babies. Hang in there. Most likely it will calm down in the next few weeks, and if not, I promise you will make it through it even if it is exhausting. Try to nap when you can.

Does he sleep for longer periods during the day? If so, there is a small chance that he just has his days and nights mixed up.

Not really. I think the longest he has ever slept was 3 1/2 hours. But he stays awake for longer periods during the day. At least at night he will go back to sleep pretty quickly.

Good luck mama! It could be a number of things, growth spurt, random fussiness or just your normal baby. I know our first son was up every 1hr-2hrs the first six months & didn't sleep through the night until after he turned two...it's no fun

Reading this thread puts the fear of god in me. My son is 7 and a half weeks and is still waking every 2 hours during the night as well. He also has a waking period where he can be awake for up to 2 hours. My partner only has him once a week (sleep in separate rooms) thinking this could go on for weeks let alone years is truely exhausting! Naps during the day for me mean I cant sleep at night despite being knackered! Man I miss my sleep! X

What's his schedule like during the day? Could he still has his days/ nights mixed up? You could try feeding him more frequently during the day in order to encourage long stretches of sleep at night. Also, open the blinds and keep it bright in the house during the day so help him learn the difference between day/night.

Girl, I feel for you! My baby was up every two hours last night. Usually at night he sleeps for 4.5 hr stretches. I'm praying it's just a growth spurt! I can't imagine this going on for weeks at a time! I hope your partner is stepping up!

DD1 was like this, but we started getting better sleep around 5-6 months. DD2 is a better sleeper, I have been forcing her to wake up every 3 hours at night (not complaining) to feed. If will get better, keep that in mind. It's so tough to see that light at the end of a tunnel.

I feel you! LO will be 7 weeks tomorrow and il he will initially fall asleep for 3 hours at bed time. After that stretch he only sleeps 2 hours at a time. He eats 4oz every 2.5-3 hours during the day so I thought he was eating enough to keep him sleeping at night?? Guess not. Hopefully some day they will finally get the hang of sleeping through the night.

You ladies must have sent me some good vibes. After I posted this he slept for 5 hours one night and 6 hours the next. Fingers crossed that he does it again!

Six weeks in and im lucky to get two hours straight. Hoping we outgrow this soon. He has his days and nights mixed so im hoping to fix that since he deep sleeps so well during the daytime

So glad I'm not alone. DS slept from 6:30-11, which was great but a mistake that we didn't sleep then. Then he was up every 1 1/2 after that! He even peed through his sheets and spit p on me! Ah the joys of motherjood
