2nd Trimester

Baby classes?

I'm 19 weeks, when should I start taking birthing classes or any other classes?

Re: Baby classes?

  • It was recommended that I start 6 weeks before my due date. It also depends on the class type, length, and schedule. I think I'll just be going to the breastfeeding class which is held multiple times a week at my hospital so I'll probably wait until 2-3 weeks before my due date and go to a class. In the mean time you can always Google search for anything you're curious about! :)

If you want Bradley Method classes look into them now. They are 12 week or longer courses. If youre taking the ones offered by your hospital then you can wait until the third trimester as they're usually 1 eight hour class or 2 four hour classes. But you should look into getting signed up now.

I found the birthing class to be very informative, especially for DH who had no idea what was going to happen. The breastfeeding class, while informative, ended up being pointless as there was a lactation consultant on hand at the hospital that stopped by every day to work with us. I didn't take a child care class and didn't miss it. I knew nothing about caring for newborns or infants and the nurses taught me everything I needed to know during those first few days, including how to change a diaper and how to hold a newborn.

Edit: Also, check into getting a tour of your hospital's maternity wing. That was so valuable the night I went in with false labor. I knew where to park, what entrance to go to, and what to expect when I got there, and it kept me much calmer.

I didn't bother with birthing classes, but infant care classes are necessary IMHO. Infant care & CPR.

  • Babies R us has all kinds of free amazing classes you can sign up for I just did one to get certified in CPR
  • We took the car seat class at babies r us, very informative. I went to the breastfeeding class at the hospital but after DS was born the lactation nurse came in and went over the same things again just like pp said
  • I'm not going to take any birthing classes, but I just took the infant CPR class yesterday at 22 weeks which I found super informative.  I will be taking a breastfeeding class in November a couple months before my due date (only to avoid the holidays, otherwise I would've probably taken it closer).
