3rd Trimester

Is it normal to have little contractions daily?

I am almost 33 weeks, and I have been having these little (i assume braxton hicks) contractions. Some are painful, but most are almost painless. They come and go through out the day, but everyday. I also have like light brown discharge, but I don't know if they are related.

  • Have you talked to your doctor? This really warrants a call, even if they are only BH contractions.

  • I had them throughout my whole pregnancy, several a day. I could make it happen by laying on my back, or by having sex. Riding in a car for a long period would aggravate it as well. My doctor said I was a "chronic contractor".
She would check my cervix to make sure it was still closed every once in awhile, but she told me not to worry. I hadn't realized it was unusual, so I hadn't been worried.
I did carry to full term.
My experience has no bearing on yours though, so you should mention it to your doctor so you can be checked if necessary.

  • Contractions can certainly be normal, but if they are accompanied by colored discharge, I would definitely be putting in a call.  The general rule of thumb is that light colored spotting is harmless, but your doctor will probably want to know about this.
  • I would also call - but about the discharge; braxton hicks can be fairly normal at this time as long as they are not regular/no recognizable pattern. Good luck!
  • I was having BH everyday for weeks, especially at work. Now I'm starting to have real contractions. My doctor said if I start having the painful contractions and can't get them to stop after an hour and 2 glasses of water to just go straight to l&d. Mine haven't been regular either, but better safe than sorry.
  • Agreed with azimum.  With both of my pregnancies, I started getting BH around 28 weeks or so and have them just about every day.  I delivered my first at 40+1, and I'm 34 weeks with my twins with a completely closed cervix still.

I personally would be more concerned about brownish discharge as I have never had any type of discharge other than clear/whitish before labor.
