Re: How I feel now that my medical bills started arriving....

  • I had a c-section and stayed in the hospital for 3 days. Our bill is around 1500. Thank goodness for Dh's insurance. The monthly premium seems worth it this year.

  • Did anyone get charged a nursery fee for the baby? Ours was listed at $1,500. The baby roomed in with us the full 30 hour stay except for a routine exam they required be done in the nursery and she was there for maybe 15 minutes. Was going to call today to ask them to explain what that fee covers to me.

I did! I got billed 5k for a "semi private room" and 3k for "nursery fee". It was just my baby and I in the room but they considered mine "semi-private" because the "nursery" was in my room. I feel it's double dipping if you ask me!
  • @kelseyrayay OMG you aren't far from me!! I'm near Tallahassee fl but you know us floridians love some wild adventures hahaha

Omg!! Really???? I go to wild adventures all the time! I practically live at the water park!!!!!
  • My emergency C section was 5K, while the hospital stay was 15K. I end up paying right at $1800 including prenatal stuff. LO's bill came yesterday and it was 5K+ insurance isn't picking any up at this point, so we got a $1100 discount, but Dang my baby is expensive.

  • These crazy bills have me wondering where in the hell all this money really goes?! I definitely isn't going into my local hospital that's for sure!

is your little one on your insurance yet? just curious because your insurance should pick up a good chunk of it. we got our hospital bill for Lincoln & it was denied through insurance cause they hadn't received the paperwork yet. now he's on it and the bills are much less

He wasn't. I was changing jobs and Cobra wouldn't pick him because of some technicality. He is on the new insurance, so everything after he hit 2 weeks is covered but his hospital stay wasn't.

  • Looks like for me it's about $12000 and I'll pay $1200. This doesn't include my lo. I'm going to ask for a discount if I pay in full.
  • Wow, glad to be Canadian!! We were covered.. I didn't realize it cost so much to have a baby in the states.
  • Same in Canada, all my dr visits ultrasounds stress tests and labour, delivery and hospital stay in private room was covered.. I couldn't imagine being in that much debt just to have a baby

Is it common for hospitals to give discounts like that? I've always paid in full, and never even thought to ask for a discount.
  • @tarheelgirl8 I have heard so. Hospitals just want their money so they are willing to work with you if you pay in full. It's worth asking at least.
  • Ours are almost $300,000 and the bills keep coming. That includes a c-section and 60 day nicu stay. Thank god for insurance and just having to pay co pays so far!
  • I have only gotten the bill for Lo. I hope mine is not a lot
  • $8,375 surgeon fee alone. The
epidural, "private room" aka a closet with crappy food, Induction drugs and then operating room costs; $28,728
Luella's bill for in-hospital pedi checks was $650, luckily no nicu. All together cost us $3,200 for our OOP portion. Luckily we have an HRA insurance plan and we had enough money saved up in the account to pay for the OOP costs! Last time with my son it cost us about $4,000 OOP and we didn't have an HRA so we had to pay that to the hospital ourselves :/

  • I haven't seen a bill yet and baby is two months old as of this week. I will only have to pay $250 for my deductible though, and I flexed the amount this year. I work for my health insurance company so I have great benefits thankfully, but I work with people every day with huge deductibles and out of pocket costs since their employer simply can't afford a great plan. When I started there in 2003 a deductible was a new thing. People were flabbergasted they would have to pay a chunk themselves for services. Fast forward a decade and now people have to pay so much out of pocket. It's crazy!
  • @pabeybaby , same here. I'm also on Medicaid but I'd still have liked to know how much. I went through 24 hrs labor then emergency c-section.
  • My bill for c section delivery and hospital stay was over $110k and my baby's was over $30k which included a 2 day NICU stay. I ended up meeting my oop max of $5,200, so that's what I ended up paying total. Next year I'm adding my husband to my insurance so our oop max will go up...not good since we are probably going to try for another lo in a year or two. I'm grateful for my insurance but man the deductibles and the oop max are so high it's hard to swallow.
