@violetigerlily those types of ads are usually private clinics that allow potential parents to "design" their child. I agree they are creepy because they put a premium on superficial qualities that may not be passed down to baby. Where I donated they matched donors by physical characteristics - same race, physical height and build, and facial structure. If the parents asked about anything else they would get ambiguous answers - I'm a college grad, work in a creative industry and have a great smile. These are usually people who just want a healthy baby and don't care about superfluous things. Not that the "designer baby" parents don't want a healthy baby, but other things seem to take precedence.
I have never heard much about this, so I decided to do some research and it is all obviously for a fantastic cause. I would consider doing it at some point, I mean I'm a FTM but I'm already so happy with my LO, I would love to be able to give a couple that chance to be a family.
Thanks @maiatene . I wasn't trying to paint the whole system as creepy and I'm sorry if it came off that way--I just had an interesting experience with those designer baby ads for four years. The way they specifically presented it always made me feel a little objectified (i.e. that my genes were more valuable if my SAT scores were higher), since their focus seemed to be in the wrong place.
Egg donation is obviously a wonderful thing that someone can do to help families who for various reasons cannot have children in other ways. I'm not sure if I would be strong enough to go through with donating myself, but am very glad that there are people willing to do that for others.
I didn't think that so worries @voiletigerlily :-) if that were my only experience with donor solicitations probably wouldn't have done it bc the ads are hella shady. That's why it's good to discuss these things so everyone can learn ;-)
