Exercise DVD recommendations

I'm an at-home exerciser, and am looking for something that I know will be safe during pregnancy. I've been reading a lot of reviews for some of the popular DVDs on amazon, and am very hesitant to actually buy anything based on those reviews.

I'm not super consistent with my workouts, but when I'm in workout mode I'm used to working out pretty hard. Jillian Michael's is my go-to, so I typically do high intensity training. The other day I did her level one ripped in 30, modifying some of the moves to take it easier. As I get further along though I don't want to worry about doing something wrong or straining myself too much.

Any good recommendations? The two main things I'm looking for are:

1. I want to sweat. I read a lot of reviews that said the workouts didn't even make them break a sweat. I don't feel like I'm doing anything if I don't get to sweat!
2. I want as little "baby talk" as possible. I think that would just irk me after getting so used to Jillian's no-nonsense attitude.

  • I'm looking forward to trying PiYo. I'm starting it in 2 weeks. Hopefully it's a good one for pregnancy!

  • I like the DVDs Chris Freytag does for Prevention magazine. They are not HIIT or as intense as Jillian Michaels but she's very easy to follow and shows modifications.

  • im a beach body coach and have used beach body programs for many years now, i would ultimately say unless you are someone who vigorously works out 6 days a week to serious things, that most beach body programs dont really seem that safe while pregnant i would definitely advise with doctor first
  • I like Erin O'Brien's Complete Pregnancy Fitness well enough. It's a mix of low impact aerobics, body weight strength training, and prenatal pilates. There's a disc included for post partum workouts too. The beginning introduction is kind of long before the warmup, but can be skipped.
  • Does anyone just use youtube instead of buying a workout video?

I've never used YouTube for workouts before, but I have heard of a subscription program that sounds sort of like Netflix for workouts. Haven't ever tried it.

I typically get my DVD's from amazon when there's a sale of I have a gift card. :)

So far I've been sticking with Jillian but doing modifications. Right now the only modifications are subbing in low impact cardio and I don't do anything that is not a controlled motion (like her weighted squat thrusts or woodchoppers or anything of the like) because I don't want to strain anything by trying to control a flailing weight. I also ease up a bit to make sure I'm never getting out of breath which sometimes means skipping the first rep of something to take a breather.

I'll start checking out some of these recommendations for when I'm further along and have to do more modifications. Chris Freytag sounds interesting!

I love PiYo!  I've definitely had to cool it a little in the last couple weeks...ugh exhaustion!  But it will definitely keep you toned.
