Naps

Does anyone else's baby not nap?? Mine is 7 weeks and will rarely take a nap during the day...has been like this for weeks! I will do everything I can to put him to sleep and as soon as I lay him down, he's awake. I'm lucky to get 10 minutes. You'd think that if he didn't nap during the day, then he would sleep through the night...not the case!!

Re: Naps

  • I can't say I do. Most of the time, I get atleast one nap each day that is about 3 hours.
  • Loading the player...
  • My baby is 8 weeks and generally doesn't nap during the day except for in the car or stroller. He is a good sleeper at night though.
  • Mine will only nap during the day in the swing! (Or if we are out in the stroller) but everything else when I lay her down she is up in 10 min. At night she sleeps fine in the fisher price rock and play sleeper. It was not my original intention to let her sleep in that at night but it's the only thing that was working.
  • I had the same issue with my baby girl for a month! I was going insane. The only way she would sleep for more than 10 min was by napping on me. She is 11 weeks now and this week was the turning point. She has taken several 3 hour+ naps this week in her crib. It will get better. For now do whatever you can to get your baby to nap. It's true that if they don't nap well, they will sleep poorly at night. I feel your pain!

Hazel won't nap during the day unless she is on my chest, in her carrier, or in the car seat. I take one for the team and allow her to sleep on me from 11ish to 1ish (she's on me right now :) and then I take an hour long walk around 4pm with her carrier so that she can nap again.
Sometimes we have trouble helping her to fall asleep at night, but once she sleeps, she is out for the night. I wake her for changes / food and she falls fast asleep again.
    She is eight weeks now.
  • Thanks ladies!! The past couple of nights have been pretty good. He will sleep on me, but I usually have things that I have to do and can't always do that. So I'm going to put him in the moby wrap in a few and see how that works. I've had success before but doesn't always work...we will see!
  • Most days 2-3 naps. One long one usually occurs following my shower. I put his bouncer in the bathroom & he almost always falls asleep, stays asleep while I get ready, & for a while after that. Some days though it's like he fights napping & just dozes off for a few short periods... Guess that still counts for babies, but not enough to get anything done for me! If we go out in car or stroller he always naps too.
  • I get one long nap out of our precious daughter in the morning, by feel like the next few in the day are pretty short ones. I feel like she sleeps better on days we do things and get out of the house.
  • My little guy is 11 weeks and we just figured out how to get him to nap. I think it just takes time getting to know each other. When he naps he definitely sleeps better. He really only catnapped up to last week! It was driving me crazy!!!
  • LO will only nap when being held. If I put him down, he will only sleep 5-20 minutes. At night, he sleeps from 2-3 hours at a time.

  • @PhoenixFrances care to share what you figured out works to get your son to nap? Some days I can get mine to sleep for an hour during the day, but never really long like 3 hours. And most days it is more like 30 mins

I wait until noon then take him for a walk or car ride. He will fall asleep in the car seat. He will fuss and fight to stay up a bit but within 10 minutes he is out. He normally will nap for 1-3 hours. On some lucky days he will also take a nap (30 minutes to an hour) in the swing in the morning and evening. I think it really just takes time getting to know each other and getting comfy.
  • Do you let him sleep in his car seat for his long nap? My son always wakes up when I take him out of it . Sometimes he will go back to sleep but not always.

I do. I know I shouldn't but it works and he doesn't seem to mind.
  • My doctor said babies will sleep better when they can be on their bellies. She says once they flip over you can let this happen! My little girl loves to sleep like this.

What did you find that works?
  • My DD is 8 weeks old and we are just getting to the point where she will nap for longer periods. I've established a "routine." When she starts showing signs of sleepiness (generally 90 minutes after she last woke up), I do all 5s's: swaddle, shush, side, sway and suck. I also turn on her dohm sound machine that simulates white noise then stick her in the Rock and play. We are currently trying out the bassinet and it only works when she is somehow wedged in! :( I know you're not supposed to put anything else in the crib or bassinet with them, but I usually put a small nursing pillow against her back and that does the trick. This has been working the past few days and I'm hoping it will continue!
  • My little guy is 9 weeks old and is up all day with a few cat naps here and there. By cat naps I mean between 2 and 20 minutes. He finally falls asleep around 10pm and is up every 2-3 hours to eat. I'm worried he's not getting enough test but the doctor said as long as he gets 12 hours a day we're ok. I wish he would nap during the day so I could get stuff done.

@Handree this is my exact situation! After I posted this, I've been trying some of the PP tips. I definitely think that when they sleep during the day, they sleep better at night. I feel like when I take him out to a friends house, the store, etc, he'll nap. Sometimes it's only a little bit, and it means I can't nap too, but I figure it's better than nothing. So I've been trying to be more active. If he naps, then it means that he goes longer in between feedings, which is good for me too! He still wants to eat every 1 1/2-2 hours. So I guess I have to stop stressing and go about my day. It seems like he always wants to prove me wrong and be a perfect angel out in public. ;)

Honestly just car and stroller rides seem to do the trick for him.

I found once my LO started to take better naps he also slept better at night. Right now we are averaging 4.5 to 5 hour nighttime sleep increments.
  • Mine fights sleep during the day. He's having a long one now but only because he's in his swing. He naps in his car seat while driving too.
  • My LO fell asleep on the way home from Wal-mart today (10 minutes from our house) so I drove around for the next two hours because I knew if I even moved the carseat he would wake up. I don't want to have to drive him around, but I was desperate today. He's been such a terrible napper lately.
