Why do they tell you to wait five days after beginning the pill to have sex? I take my 5th pill this Sunday and planned on starting the every-other-day regimen on Monday. Was just trying to gain some clarity on the five day wait?
I start my first round tonight! 150mg x5 days....my RE told me the same thing, but, I'm not sure why to answer your question. Just comfirming another opinion.did you have any issues with the clomid? I'm a little anxious about it-as it seems he's put me on a large dose and I have a wedding this weekend.
I'm pretty sure it's fine to have sex in the 5 days you are taking the pill. I just think they are telling you to start every other day after the last pill to assist in conception. It would be highly unusual to ovulate while taking the pills.
Married to DH 10/6/12
TTC since 5/14
Unexplained with (controlled) hypothyroidism and suspected ovulatory dysfunction (but, I do ovulate on my own)
Clomid 50 mg 3/15 (unmonitored) - BFN
Clomid 50 mg + metformin 4/15 (unmonitored) - BFN
First RE appt. 5/15; Natural cycle 5/15 monitored with 2 mature follicles and Pregnyl Trigger (full dose) + prometrium - BFN
6/15 HSG - clear tubes & normal uterus; great PCT test results
TI - 100 mg Clomid + prometrium (AM & PM) + vaginal estrace (AM & PM) 6-7/15 (monitored) --> no additional response and thinned lining - BFN
TI - Injectables (follistim + Gonal-F, Ganirelix, & 1/2 dose Pregnyl) + prometrium (AM & PM) 9/15 --> 3-7 mature follicles (3 definites and 4+ that could have matured due to trigger) @ O -->BFN + 5 large cysts
I think @riveridgional is right. Mostly because you are taking it on days 3-7 of your cycle (at least I am) which is when you are still having your period so it would not benefit you ttc by BD'ing on your period.
Maybe it's to make sure you are not at risking over-producing follicles and risking multiples. Ie, you don't want to be filing up the Ut with swimmers and have 5 follicles without you knowing it? So they want to wait until your monitoring appointment to check follicle count?
They've got me on days 5-9. No sex until after the last pill is gone. I go for bloodwork in 1 week, 2 weeks, and 3 weeks. And supposedly an ultrasound in three weeks, I think the paper said. I need to contact them though, all my lab days fall on weekends when the lab is closed.
This is my first round too. I've taken it at night, only thing that bothers me is the hotflashes. Have had mild cramping from both sides. Husband wanted to get frisky last night, I told him - 5 days! He said why? Then I realized I wasn't really sure. lol
Day 3 tonight... Period is nearly completely gone, now. Not many side effects other than I've had a headache-but who knows if that's clomid or just period hormones. Little cramping, but again, who knows from what? I need cry like a 2 year old at the wedding... But I made it. so far so good...
I feel kind of dumb asking about this also. I just took my last pill last night and I'm not really sure when we should try. I keep seeing advice about starting on day 5 or waiting 5 days after last pill, I've also seen advice to try days 18-21...
I don't want to make it a chore for DH. He works at 3am, goes to school during and TTC on top of that wears him out sometimes!
I got told 5 days after the last pill to try every other day. can I ask how much clomid you were taking? Is this your first round? I feel like my doc started me off really high at 150mg.
Have you all tried the Clomid Ovulation Calculator? I found this very helpful and helped me understand when I'd actually ovulate.. or be given a range due to the clomid.. https://www.babymed.com/tools/clomid-ovulation-calculator

FX for you ladies!
You ovulate 36 hours after your trigger shot. Using a calculator to tell you when you will ovulate is pretty useless, unless you can see the future.

@Cythe I did not have a trigger shot, so it's not totally useless. I also had a very unusual start date for my clomid, so it was helpful to have a range that made "sense" for me.

You probably need a new RE then. Having a trigger shot is the best way to ensure you ovulate when you are inseminated without it, it could be days before you actually O and all that IUI sperm will be long dead. I stand by my statement, an electronic calculator is pretty useless.

I used an OPK yesterday and the test line was very faint..so based on past experience, I'm thinking it's coming. Did the BD Saturday night, last night...just gonna keep going every other night. Gonna test every day with the OPK.
I found the calculator to be useful. Not everyone has access to trigger shots.
But, hopefully you are all being monitored with ultrasounds and bloodwork, so your doctor can give you a realistic idea of when you will O. Just a general rule of thumb is to BD every other day after your last pill. Your doctor should either give you a trigger shot or be able to tell you your expected O date and confirm O through BW and US. The calculator would only be based on typical O dates and not your body. I guess it's good to give you an idea, but it seems you would just know based on 5-10 days after you O the range of typical O dates. Also, in case you have to do future cycles, your O date will likely vary cycle to cycle while on Clomid. Make sure you're being monitored and ask your RE for advice on suspected O dates! I suspect @Cythe has been through this routine a few times or has already moved on from Clomid. I understand how overwhelming and stressful it is the first time, but after you've been through it, it's a little easier to see the value or nonvalue in something like that calculator. I agree with her, though, that the calculator should not really be useful as long as you are being properly monitored. Best of luck to all of you!

My doctor told me on day 10(the day after my last clomid pill) to start the every other day baby dancing until I get the results of my blood test. She said any other time of the month we could do whatever, whenever. I finished my 3rd round of clomid this month and I go in on 9-29 to verify ovulation. Last month my levels were barely positive for O, so they upped the clomid dose to 150mg.

I'm not doing IUI so no trigger shot needed here yet either!! I'm getting a HGG Tuesday and BW the 7th to check progesterone level. I was on 150mg days 3-7

Do you mean an HSG? Where they shoot dye through your tubes?
@larnott what is an HGG? I've never heard of that before. Did you mean HCG? If so, that is the trigger shot. They'll give it for timed intercourse purposes too. DH and I don't need to do IUI due to our postcoital test results, but we'll still get the trigger for timed intercourse.

I did 2 rounds of Clomid IUIs (am now on letrozole for cysts), so yes. However, I'm a product of the time before the bump became a wasteland of scientific information and am just commenting so that future people who read this thread know that this is how science works, not an electronic calculator on the internet.
ETA: Also, that everyone really should be advocating for themselves and pushing for a trigger shot for IUIs. TI cycles are whatev because the cost of the meds is nothing compared to the cost of an IUI.
