Level 2 ultrasound - what should I expect?

We have an ultrasound Thursday that the scheduler estimated would take 2 hours to complete. The reason for this follow up is because his femurs and humerus were measuring 2 weeks behind at 31 weeks. We'll be 35 weeks for Thursday's appt. Has anyone else experienced this? Did you baby catch up in growth? If not, what did the genetic counselor say? I'm doing my best to not stress but the thought of something being physically wrong with our little guy that will make his life harder breaks my heart into a million pieces.

Re: Level 2 ultrasound - what should I expect?

  • I'm not sure what specifically a level 2 is but pretty sure I have had them as I have to go weekly to maternal fetal care for growth scans since baby is measuring small. It's just a normal ultrasound like your anatomy scan where they will monitor cord flow to make sure baby is getting enough nutrients and then they take measurements on the comp of baby. They will then take the info to your doctor to review and they should come back within 10 mins or so and give you an update. If you have already done genetic testing and no issues you should be fine. If not they may recommend a test like maternity21. But since you are pretty far along at this point it's probably not that beneficial.
  • Hi! The ultrasound won't be any different physically for you. It is a very detailed scan that looks at bone and organ development/blood flow closely.

  • Thanks ladies.
  • Ultrasounds are pretty subjective. We had one really scary false alarm regarding the ventricles in baby's brain and others where they told us her head was measuring big. I had my daughter a little early last Saturday, we even let them do an ultrasound of her brain before we brought her home, and everything is fine. I know it's hard, but try not to stress. Baby's measurements will probably straighten out, but even if they don't according to the ultrasound he could still be totally fine in real life.
  • Update - baby's legs and arms have caught up but the rest of him has dropped off. He's only grown one weeks worth in the past 4 weeks and is in the 4th percentile. We're scheduled for an induction at 37 weeks at UW which has the best nicu in the state. Hoping that the ultrasounds are off and our little guy will not have to spend any time away from us.
  • Our little man was measuring 3 weeks behind. They estimated him at 5.5 lbs and I was induced at 39 weeks. He was 6 lbs 11oz, 20 inches long and perfectly healthy. Don't stress

Mine was 9th percentile whole time and went into labor just shy of 34 weeks on Thursday. Eat as much protein as you can before then. Luckily mine had grown over a lb in two weeks so she came at 4lb 9oz. She is still in NICU for weight and size. They want to get her up on full feeding and get rid of jaundice then she will come home. Hopefully not longer than two weeks but we will see. I'm at Childrens hospital of WI. Level 4 NICU and she is in very good hands. So while it stinks I trust she is getting what she needs and will be perfect when she can come home.
