Bring on the TMI

So, I hate Mirena! I have had it for 4.5 years.  At this point I'd be getting it out regardless of TTC. Anyway....  I have a lot of issues with mine and a lot of concerns. But, right now, I'm curious about what to expect once its out. I know some of you ladies have had yours removed recently... How was the pain? Are you swimming in blood? Cramping? Tell me everything!!!

Re: Bring on the TMI

  • Hi! I actually had a really positive experience with my Mirena, but the hormone crash after removal was terrible. I felt so up and down; I told DH I felt very 'ragey' X(. It's been a little over a week and now I'm starting to feel better emotionally. I didn't bleed until the fourth day after removal; it was a very tiny amount, enough for a panty liner and it only lasted a day. I had a little bit of cramping the same day I bled, as well. The actual removal was easy peasy. Now I'm just trying to figure out when I'll see AF since she never showed up while I had Mirena.

  • Thank you @MrsRo731. I'm glad you had a good experience with it. And I'm glad to know getting it out wasn't traumatic. Keep me post on whether or not AF comes back with a vengeance.
  • Forgot to add, I've had acne since removal, too. Hoping that goes away soon.

  • I had one after DS1 was born and had a good experience with it.  I had it removed when he was one and the hormone crash was crazy.  I was all over the place.  The withdraw bleeding lasted about 2 weeks for me, and that whole first moth I felt so off.  Month two I had a regular cycle and got pregnant.  I didn't have one put in after DS2, and opted for the pill instead.  Good luck and I hope all goes well!.

My experience having the Mirena was a positive one-- had it in for three years after my son was born in 2012. I'm sorry you're having a different experience.

We're TTC #2 so had it removed in July 2015. It was a bit uncomfortable, but the pain was really, really quick. I spotted for 2-3 days. I expected a gigantic flow of blood but nothing like that happened. About two weeks later, I started spotting again for like two weeks straight. It was inconvenient but nothing too disruptive. My moods were okay, if anything, I think my sex drive increased.

I also wanted to add that my ob/gyn assured me that I'd get pregnant easily after removing Mirena... but that wasn't the case for me. I had not gotten my period after removing Mirena so figuring out my fertile window was a challenge. I was given Clomid to "get things started" and then my period came. I PMS'd like crazy (mood swings, irritability, cravings, etc.) but fortunately it was short.  Probably the only time I really felt "out of it" since removing Mirena.

Now that I have had my period, I have a better idea of when I should be ovulating (next week!) so we'll BD every other day until I get either AF or a BFP :)

  • Thanks ladies!! I really appreciate it. Not looking forward to the "crash". Best of luck with TTC @tamaraso !!!
  • Hi! I had mine removed on July 1 and was dreading it. I had no idea it was going to hurt so much with the cramping going but it was a BREEZE coming out!!! I am squeamish and have a low pain tolerance. I pass out when my blood is drawn. Taking out the IUD, I could totally do it again no problem. You cough and it's out.

I did have a LOT of blood though 2 days later. I just got some extra awesome pads and sat on my couch. The withdrawal bleed lasted 5 days for me and I got my period 9 days after removal. I know all of this because I started charting on FF immediately, so I suggest that! It's great watching my temperature even out (it was super wonky in July for me).
