The Return of the Period.

My little guy is turning six months at the end of the month and up until now has been exclusively breastfed. I've read and heard that it can take several months for your period to return and while I'm certainly not complaining or concerned, I'm curious to know others' experiences. Anyone else still enjoying period-free days? For those who have had a visit from Aunt Flo again, when did it return?

Re: The Return of the Period.

  • Mine returned about 3 weeks ago (daughter was 5 months old). I'm not trying to be a bearer of bad news but it was HORRID. I don't know if it's just me forgetting how horrible periods are, but asking around it seems that's the general consensus. Heavy, sore, and long. But supposedly it's not like this all the time and will get better. I'm just waiting to see when my next one will be, as some people said they weren't regular until they fully stopped BF!

  • With my first I went till 9 months. I exclusively nursed her, and I noticed my periods returned when she stopped nursing at night. I'm exclusively nursing this time too, and it's been 6 months and no period.
  • I am EBF and pumping while at work. My son is a little over 6 months.... Still no period.
  • I am EBF and pumping at work. I got my period when my daughter was 5 months. The period was a bit longer and a lot sore.
  • I'm down to nursing twice daily with bottles and solids for the rest of her feedings. My daughter is 5 1/2 months. She hasn't nursed through the night since around 8 or 9 weeks. And although I very much feel like I'm going to be getting my period (and have been feeling this way for about 6 weeks), it has yet to show up. I think some women need to stop nursing completely in order to get those hormones back in order, and I might be one of them! But I'm not looking forward to it... I have endometriosis, so I'm sort of hoping that things will be better rather than worse.
  • Mine came back a week ago, 5 days before she turned 6 months. It wasn't bad, just like my prepregnancy periods. I bf and started solids around 4.5 months, but she had a few days where it was a struggle to get her to nurse, so I think that may be what caused it. I've never had bad periods anyways, usually just sore boobs and I get a bit more emotional. Which, let's be real, I already have those things as a new mom anyways!
  • my son will be 6 months old in 10 days. my period returned a week ago and it has been terrible, I have been bleeding since last Monday and its still going strong I know that's not what you wanted to hear but from what I've heard that's just how it is. heavy long and painful.
  • I'm exclusively breast feeding. I Got my first period after 5 months but it was weird. A one time spotting and it was over. So waiting for the next month to see if it's different. With my other daughter I got it back at 8 months post natal and it was normal.

Just in case, you might want to check if you're pregnant. Same thing happened to me, spotting and no period. BOOM! Positive test.
  • Thanks for the responses everyone! Certainly does sound like everyone has had some different experiences and my heart goes out to those who have had horrible periods come back! I'm really not looking forward to that.
  • My bub is 6 months in 6 days and today, it started. Although, it was just some brown spotting. And now it's stopped. My little miss is EBF and the last few days she's been a bit fussy, not eating properly. I just read a previous post.. Oh oooo!
  • Haha... It wouldn't be surprising if now is the time we hear all about those pregnancies that start right around weaning. My SIL got pregnant after her first postnatal period. A little reminder to be careful! But a more likely scenario is hormonal imbalance and the body struggling to get back to normal, with spotting being a symptom. Just take precautions and don't trust breastfeeding as a decent birth control method right now. Unless, of course, you're eager for the next LO! (Full disclosure; I went through a few weeks that I could have sworn I was pregnant, with morning sickness and all, and a day of implantation-like bleeding... Never got a positive, still no period, but I feel better so I assume it's all just hormones!)
  • I started birth control after 6 weeks and then got mine 2 weeks after that. I've had a normal on up until July and I had one for only 3 days and since then I spot every once in awhile and that's it

I did the same thing. I got the implant 2 weeks after my 6 week check up and have only had one since having it put in. It was extremely heavy and I haven't had one since.
  • My first period was really normal however my second one was the worst I had ever had in my life.  I read it's your body cleaning out down there but it was terrible.  - Good luck!

I just went through my first post-natal period and it was terrible. I thought I had a stomach bug at first. I woke up one morning feeling really dehydrated and with a headache, almost like a hangover, and thought that was weird. As the day went on, I felt more and more nauseous. I threw up a couple of times and was having horrible stomach cramps, achy and tired. I never really had period cramps post baby so I didn't think it was anything related, finally I started to feel a little better and then BAM, period. So weird.

**Edited to add--- BF and pumping--- 7 months
  • EBF, 7 months, no period yet. I am wondering if it also has to do with having my IUD though.

    Fingers crossed!

    DS #1: 3/8/15

  • EBF, 7.5 months, no period yet, and completely terrified after reading all this!
  • @devinsmommy31115 I was pretty terrified as well, but it turns out that my first postpartum period was actually better than my pre-pregnancy periods! So it really can vary. I think the majority of women have bad periods first time around, but there's no telling who or why.
