2nd Trimester

20 weeks ultrasound

hi everyone I just had my 20 weeks ultrasound and got my result via email today explaining to me that everything looked fine but they couldn't get a good view of the mouth nose and the 4 chambers of the heart I am extremely concerned. They want me to go back in 2 weeks for another scan but all I'm doing is freaking out. Has this happens to anyone else? Any advise would be appreciated

Re: 20 weeks ultrasound

  • Sometimes they just can't see certain parts depending on the baby's position. Which is honestly normal. No need to worry.

First, breathe. Yes, its happened to me with both viable pregnancies. I've had to go in twice for each baby because they were too wiggly and the tech couldn't get clear images. I understand it can be worrisome and scary. Sometimes baby is not cooperating and there is a need for follow up. I hope you get good news and do your best not to fret too much (I know, its really hard) until you get clearer images.

  • My 20 week ultrasound was Friday, I was told to return in 10 weeks because they couldn't see his heart very well. 10 weeks! I'm dyin. Haha. But I know if it was very urgent they would have probably tried again in a few days.. So I understand your worries, but I doubt there's any reason to worry :) .
  • Same thing happened to me. Try not to worry. My baby wasn't very cooperative the first time, which is why they couldn't get a good view of her profile & heart. After the second scan was done, all came back normal.

  • I'm going to echo what everyone else has said.  I also think that if they saw something that truly looked like a red flag, they would be sending you to a maternal fetal medicine specialist ASAP rather than telling you to come back in two weeks.

Bottom line -- I am a worrier by nature, but I wouldn't worry about this.
  • My little guy has been so stubborn with ultrasounds. I had to be sent to the perinatal center because they couldn't see anything beyond a leg, spine, and a kidney. The peri saw a bit more but not everything. Like you only two chambers of heart but still couldn't see other organs, no facial shots, couldn't measure left side, and minor shot of cord. We have to go back again in two weeks to see if they can see more.
