Pregnant after IF

Is there still hope?

Hey guys! I'm active on the infertility boards. I had my second iui with clomid and trigger shot. I went in for my beta this past Friday and levels came back as 5.9 so doctor said it is a chemical pregnancy. I still haven't bled. Has anyone had a successful pregnancy with such low levels? They don't want to see me again until I get AF. I also should mention that I took a hpt today and it was a BFN. Also how long does it typically take to bleed when this is happening? I want to start my third cycle. Any experiences to share?

Re: Is there still hope?

  • Hi @Drove2u I have heard of quite a few betas in that range that went on to healthy pregnancies. I unfortunately don't have any input on when AF shows back up. I really hope they are wrong and I'd keep POAS until AF shows.

  • Thanks so much!! Yes I will test again tomorrow morning. It's so crazy too how they don't want to blood test me again and just said I'm having a chemical. Like there was no gray area. I have been reading and it seems like it could take a week for AF to show up.
  • I am so sorry. It's just not fun. A girl a couple threads down had a beta of 15 and sadly it didnt turn out well. But stranger things have happen. I had a CP first beta was 30s and second was a 6. I had been testing every morning and the day of my first beta was the darkest line so when the nurse called with my second beta i knew it wasn't going to be good. My period came the next morning. Basically when beta got down to zero. I wish I had a success story for you. I hope it works out or you get another BFP soon.

  • @Drove2u I do think that is odd they wouldn't test you again. Because from what I've heard the initial number doesn't matter it's the trend over time . I know doctors know what they are doing but I'm not giving up hope completely until AF comes . For some reason I have a feeling it won't come for me and I will have to have another Hcg test this week . I still feel like I'm in a state of limbo . I'm sorry that we are both in this uncomfortable position but I am here for you ! This is a very isolating place to be in :(

  • Very sorry to hear of this. Are/were you on progesterone? That can delay AF if you are. I had a cp with a beta of 9. At the same time I had started to spot. After AF hit I called and went in for another beta to confirm it was back at 0. Once that happened I could start preparing for my next cycle.

Wishing you the best of luck in the future.

  • @Justone13 I was never taking progesterone so not sure what the delay is. I only took clomid and ovidrel and my period is always on time. Like clockwork. It's now three days late. I guess it can take up to a week?
  • I am sorry, if your beta was on 14dpo, I'm very sorry but it's not likely this is going to turn out well. I had a beta of 5 at 14dpo with my chemical. I got my period three days later. Most stories of super low betas turning out well are if they were before 14dpo. This is probably why your clinic stated its a chemical pregnancy so matter of factly. I remember the feeling the same way you do, like hey there's a baby isn't there shouldn't we watch this. Unfortunately when AF will show after a loss is never easy to answer it can vary greatly. For me AF showed before my beta hit zero, both with CP and MC, but I know others that have hit zero and still had to wait a awhile. My beta was actually still rising when AF showed, very frustrating. I know the feeling of being anxious to keep moving forward but you will likely need a break cycle before you can continue treatments. Unless your beta hits zero on or before AF shows. Take some time for yourself, rest and be good to yourself.

Yes. Even though your period is normally like clockwork you've been taking hormones that could effect it. If it doesn't come within the week I would call your re. They might want to do a sono to check your lining. Good luck!

  • Thanks!! Still no AF. Very frustrating.
  • So this is what happened in the last couple of days. I ended up bleeding heavily for two days then it stopped. Went in for my baseline on Friday (yesterday) to start a new cycle and my hcg levels went up. Just slightly. So they're thinking it's an ectopic pregnancy. But I bled so much. I wonder if I lost a twin? Took hpt this morning and it was positive. So confused and frustrated. Has anyone had any similar experiences?
  • Yes, it may be ectopic, it is very unlikely that you lost a twin. I'm sorry I would stay away from the pee sticks at this point. I assume your doctor is checking your beta again soon. I'm hoping it goes down on its own at this point that's the best thing that can happen. If it is ectopic and continues to rise you will need a shot of mexthrotextrate. Ectopic pregnancies can be very dangerous so please just make sure you are being watched. Having said all that. It may not be ectopic my CP beta rose very slightly before going down on its own. Sending you some hugs, I know how awful this time in limbo can be. Do anything that takes your mind off it and makes you feel even a little bit better.

  • I had a loss last year, my beta rose slowly over three draws and then started rising faster. Nothing could be found on US, so I was told maybe ectopic, then we found a tiny sac on the 3rd US. At this point I was told it may be normal. The last US showed a big empty sac.
It was a complete roller coaster of emotions for weeks.
I hope the best for you, and to know quickly what is going on. The waiting and not knowing is the worst.

Two years, two losses and three IUIs...

  • Thank you so much. It just sucks so bad not having answers. I won't know anything until Wednesday. Seems so far away.
  • I feel like it is strange they are waiting until Wednesday. If it is ectopic (which it may not be), why would they keep waiting?

  • I've read that levels can rise before dropping. Maybe they are giving it enough time to drop? I have no idea. But I thought it was so strange too. They said if I'm in a lot of pain or feel faint to go to er.
  • I mean what's another option you know? Like what else could it be? My levels aren't substantially rising.
  • @Drove2u I'm sorry that you are dealing with this. Before I was seeing an RE, I did ovulate once on my own (confirmed by OPK) but didn't get AF until 22 days after that. So I was 8 days late. I feel like maybe that was a chemical pregnancy, so my advice is to wait a week to see if anything happens. Good luck to you!
  • @jlynn330 yes at first they said chemical pregnancy and then four days after that I bled A LOT for two days. Lots of tissue coming out so I figured great it's over now I can start again. So I went in last Friday to start a new cycle and they said my levels were going up so now they're thinking ectopic. Im still get bfps. I go in tomorrow and hope to find out the. It's just so weird because it really looked like I bled everything out. Sorry for all the misspellings. It seems like I can't go back and edit off my phone now. a
  • Hoping tomorrow goes as well as it can and you get some relief and answers.
  • Thanks! All they did was blood test me so now I'm waiting for the results.
  • Levels went up again to 112. They're still saying ectopic or chemical. I'm so frustrated. I have to go back Friday for an ultrasound and more blood work.
  • I think it's weird that they haven't already done an ultrasound to see if the pregnancy is ectopic. I'm sorry...I bet this is so frustrating for you.
  • Unfortunately it's unlikely they will be able to see anything on an ultrasound with betas that low. A friend went through a very similar experience, it was ruled ectopic in the end and she had to get the shot. I'm very sorry that you are dealing with this. This is very hard to deal with and you have my prayers for peace and the ability to move on from this soon. Hugs to you.

  • @Drove2u That really sucks. @designer303 does have a good point, you usually can't see much on an ultrasound until your HCG is around 2,000. I'm so sorry you're going through this. I cannot imagine how emotionally rolling this is for you. :/

  • I had 3 failed iui's - it sucks. Nothing about it is fun. I wouldn't wish if on anyone. Thinking of you - hope you have been able to move on.
We were successful with ivf - but it does seem like "this should work! Why isn't this working?!" So frustrating
  • Thanks so much @blended10 I have another doc appt tomorrow but I think my levels keep rising. And will also have an ultrasound. I guess depending on what that says we will see how to proceed.
