Grunting in sleep

Our LO is 3 weeks and grunts during the night when he sleeps. He doesn't do this during the day and this is something that just started a few days ago. Anyone else have a grunter? I'll talk to the pediatrician about it but also trying to understand if it's common.

Re: Grunting in sleep

  • My little girl is 5 weeks and she grunts all the time. Lol

  • Normal, it stops when they get bigger. I'm a light sleeper and can't deal with it so I can't share a room with a baby (at least not the whole night) as it keeps me awake!
  • Yes! He makes the weirdest noises when he sleeps! I keep thinking he is awake and wants to feed but he is totally asleep!
  • Yes. I make fun of the grunting all the time!
  • Yep! 8 weeks and going strong! It's gotten a little better with gas drops. I'm hoping she grows out of it soon!
  • Mine does that still at 7 weeks.  Hubby kicked him out of our room and into his because of it lol.  We still watch him on our video monitor though.  He only does it when he is trying to poop/fart
  • Yep normal, and I also think it is gas related. I try to bicycle her legs good right before bed and during any diaper changes I have to do at night, and that seems to help a lot.
  • Ours grunts all the time! Usually it looks like he's trying to pass gas or poop, but sometimes he's more awake and it looks like he's trying to get his arms out of his swaddle!
  • My little grunter got kicked out of our room already! He is so loud! It is usually gas related. Once he gets it out he stops for a bit. Other times he is stuffy or fidgeting.
  • Always grunting...we call him the milk goblin, it's waaaaay better than crying though!
  • Another grunter. I found that more frequent burping helps.
  • Yup. With DS2, I figured out he was grunting because he was swaddled and trying to get his hands out to suck on them!

  • Thanks ladies. Pediatrician recommended gripe water. We tried it this afternoon and it worked instantly. I'll try all the other recommendations too as I'd prefer not to have to use any type of medicine. But good to know the gripe water helps!
  • Our little man is a grunter too. Some nights are better than others. He grunts during the day too. We just started using tummy calm, natural homeopathic gas drops and they seem to be helping.
