2nd Trimester

How much is too much?? :-(

I am 6 months (25wks) and my doctor told me I've gained a little too much weight. :-( this made me a little sad. I've gained about 16sh lbs. but if you look at me I don't look like I've gained a lot. It's weird. I don't know if this is just me overeating or if it's truly normal and ok? Help what are your thoughts ladies?

My thought is your doctor is a jerk. Seriously, 16 lbs?? I've gained almost 20 but haven't been over eating and I work out every day. I cried to my doc about it at my last apt and she said she isn't concerned at all because I am active. Just keep us with working out and it won't be a big deal. Hormones do funky things to our bodies and sometimes can cause weight gain just from the hormones.

  • Thanks that makes sense. Especially the part about hormones .... I've never felt hormones like this before. :-)
  • I'm 19 weeks and have gained 12lbs.  I hope I'm only up 16 by the time I hit 25 weeks!  I'm hungry all the time and all I crave is junk food.
  • I've never had a dr tell me I gained too much and honestly 16lbs is not much at all. Every woman gains differently. Don't worry Hun. I think he's being anal. As long as you and baby are healthy I wouldn't stress it at all.
  • I will be 25wks this coming Monday, and at my ultrasound last week my total weight gain so far was 15lbs. The doctor was not concerned at all, and I don't think you should be either. :)
  • I had gained 15 lbs at my last appointment (25 weeks) and my doctor told me my weight looked great. I stared at 135 pre pregnancy.
  • Yeah I'm hungry all the time and feel guilty that I want something sweet everyday! lol
  • Thanks ladies I feel much better.

I'm 24 weeks and have gained 25 lbs. So your doctor is a bit of a douche for saying that. I mean, it totally depends on your weight pre pregnancy, but at 25 weeks it is normal to gain a pound a week after first trimester isn't it? And you are roughly gaining half a pound a week during the first trimester! I feel I read this somewhere. Again, this differs for everyone, but you are definitely right on track!

I started about 10# over weight, and my dr said through out the pregnancy I should try to gain between 15 and 25. (Only because I asked her what a safe amount would be) and I'm assuming that is on the low side. I'm 17 weeks and have only gained 2# (from starting weight) after loosing about 6#. So ultimately I've gained back about 8# after loosing weight initially. I would ask your dr based on your body type, weight, etc, how much he expects you to gain, and ultimately what would be too much at the end. Imo he sounds like a jerk. Lol

I think your doctor needs to chill out. Some women just gain.

I know a vegan workout-a-holic who gained 60 lbs, no matter what every pregnancy. She lost it all. Did it 4 times.

I never gained more than 30lbs. It's not the end of the world.

  • I have started out at a healthy BMI with each pregnancy, and gained 45-50 with my first two. This time, At 18 weeks, I've gained 17 pounds. My doctor says I look fine, has said, "I'm not concerned. I have patients that I get concerned about and I speak up. I'm not concerned about you." I always gain 5-10 in first tri because munching is the only thing that helps my morning sickness, and that starts things off to be a little on the higher end of total weight gain. But I'd rather gain an extra ten pounds than be even more miserable (still have MS at 18 weeks here). I've lost the weight within a few months of delivering the past two times, and I'm not stressing about it this time either. Baby and I are healthy.

  • I'm overweight to begin with last pregnancy I was told to only gain 15#. I gained 27 and had an 11 pound kid, by 3 months PP I was down 20 pounds from my prepregnancy weight. This time 20# lighter I was advised to gain 30-40 with twins and they wanted me to gain 20# by 20 weeks. There is a wide range of normal in pregnancy weight gain so try not to get too upset.
  • I think this is totally ridiculous of your doc... Seriously you are in the normal range... I'm up 16 lbs at 24 weeks... I'm not worried about it at all as I was exactly at this amount with my son and gained a total of 33 lbs with him.. Which is normal.. Do Donf worry you are ll good...
  • I'm 5'6 and my starting weight was 138 and now I weigh 150-153sh lbs. I think I'm fine. She basically told me I've gained a few more lbs than is technically considered normal at this point in my pregnancy. She said we'll check you at the next visit and hopefully you will have progressed as normal. I don't think she met it bad but I was just surprised she took the time to express it to me. I'm not sweating it too much. I was just curious where everyone else was at. Thanks for the feedback ladies.
  • I gaind that much...Just try not to over eat
  • My doctor told me at my last visit (I was 19wks) that I gained too much weight! I was shocked and about cried...lol. He said I gained 12lbs and should only be around 8lbs. He also said I should only gain about 25lbs through the whole pregnancy. Obviously he doesn't know what it's like being pregnant...lol.
