progenity testing controversy

When my doc suggested the testing due to my age, I was totally willing to do it. Also finding out the gender earlier would be a plus for me. So I did some research on the test an ran across some professionals argueing that if peeps found out that early along that they would possibly end the pregnancy. I can't even imagine someone ending their pregnancy just due to what gender the baby is. This has been bugging the heck out of me. Who would do this????

I don't think they meant they'd terminate due to the sex of the baby, but because of genetic defects...

  • Actually, I saw that topic exactly, and I was very surprised by it..
  • I agree with pp. Almost 100% sure it has nothing to do with sex and more to do with what the actual point of the test is- discovering if your child has genetic markers for defects.
  • I saw a blog from someone in Canada stating that they will not give gender until 18 wks to prevent abortions due to gender disappointment. Not sure if those facts r true or not though.
  • In India they aren't allowed to reveal period- because they will abort the girls.

  • I am in Canada, near Toronto, and there has been lots of drama about sex-selective abortion. Many cultures value boys far, far more than girls and will absolutely abort for that reason.
  • In Ontario there are a lot of places that will not tell you the sex until late in the pregnancy. (Mostly in the GTA area) It is due to sex selective abortions.
  • @charley15 I learned this earlier this evening. We had my husband's coworker who is visiting from India over for dinner. We showed him an ultrasound of our new baby to compare to our son, and he told us that doctors cannot tell parents the sex in India so that people won't abort the baby girls. I was shocked.
  • Different cultures value boys over girls. This is true in India and China. Its deeply rooted in many aspects of culture that I can't understand having not grown up with that mindset. There are plenty of folks that will terminate for various reasons. I'm not shocked at all because the pressure to conceive sons is so high. There are many things I can't imagine happening to me or life handing me-- but that doesn't mean it shocks me. The world is a very harsh place in very many areas.
