They bend their legs any way that is comfortable for them! They don't know different. 18 mos, 25 lb, 33 in, and nowhere near ff. His friend is 5 months older and TALL for her age. They are comfy! :-)
My son is almost 2.5, kind of on the tall side, and rear-faces no problem. His legs are totally fine. @ready4theparty I have never been in that situation (carsick), so at least that is a reason and not just because "he wants to face forward" (have heard this one too many times). I can't honestly say what I would do if my kid were sick every time we had to ride in the car. I think that's more understandable than some other reasons, although obviously i would prefer to keep him rear-facing if at all possible.
@loveymay It's good you're hearing about this now! It gives you plenty of time to read up on statistics and information about extended rear-facing. If it's something you want to do, I would recommend just doing some research before you buy your convertible car seat (which you don't need until your kid is around one anyway if you plan to use an infant seat at first) and choose one with high rear-facing limits... there are plenty out there! We have the Graco headwise (Target version, they make a bunch of very similar seats) and got an awesome deal on ours with cartwheel and Target coupons a few years ago. SO keep your eyes peeled for deals!
