Rolling Over

My 18 week old is rolling from back to front like crazy. She is not able to roll front to back yet so this is stressing me out at night :( anyone else going through this? How do you sleep?

Re: Rolling Over

  • My 16 week old is the same, but she's long been able to lift her head and chest and move them side to side, so I don't worry.  She just will get pissed off if she can't roll right back over, so I need to flip her when she cries.  We bed share, so I've watched her move her head to get more comfortable in her sleep, so I'm not worried.

I feel like waaaaay too many people on this board are worried about this! Most online sources say that babies start rolling front to back around 4 months and a little longer for back to front (5-6 months to master).

If she can roll front to back, she can move her head to the side. This is how it is for most babies. I've just heard that you should put them on their back to sleep but if they roll over it's no biggie.

  • Right, but both of ours CAN'T roll front to back - they're doing it backwards.  Like I said though, she is good at lifting her head and turning it side to side after she rolls back to front (she's great at that!).  Even if she can't get back on her back, she can move her face and head fine.  And she cries for mom to flip her back over when she's tired of lying on her stomach....even at 1am.
  • DS rolls from back to front but not the other way as well.. The first couple of nights were stressful because he would freak out if he didn't position his head and couldn't turn so I was in there constantly trying to flip him back. Now he's gotten better at rolling over and having his head to the side.. But even when he doesn't he can lift his head up high and cry out for me to flip him back! Lol but yea.. I'm still stressed when I'm sleeping and waking up nonstop to check the monitor.. Can't wait until he can flip himself back onto his back..

  • My LO goes from back to front constantly but not the other way.. Yet! She has been sleeping on her tummy for about 3 weeks now and is perfectly happy and comfortable. If your baby is okay with sleeping on their belly then let them. Honestly I don't think about it, she lets us know when she is uncomfortable and that hasn't happened for some time now! Just make sure their head is turned and the baby will be just fine!

People are allowed to freak out and ask as any questions as they want!
  • This is exactly what I've been stressing about with DD! I wake in a panic, fumbling for the monitor in the dark to make sure she's ok. I cannot wait for DD to roll front to back. I feel like we're close!

  • My DS also only rolls back to front. He only started doing it in his crib the last few days, but can't fall asleep when he does. I'm not sure if this will change. My biggest concern right now is getting him to nap well. He's a terrible napper, and rolling isn't helping. I'd probably worry a bit more about him sleeping on his belly, but he hasn't fallen asleep that way yet, so I haven't yet.
  • Can I ask what kind of surface is your LOs having success at rolling over on? My DS is still not sleeping in his crib, so he doesn't spend much time in there except a nap once a day - if I'm lucky. I tried to lay out a blanket on our rug (we have hardwood floors) and he seemed to have better traction, but still not rolling over yet.
  • My little guy is rolling from back to stomach as well, but can't roll from stomach to back. I have no problem letting him sleep on his stomach because he has enough head control, but he flips after a while and my husband or I have to roll him over to his back. I've read this phase typically lasts 2-3 weeks and that most babies are much better sleepers once they get rolling both directions down.
  • Finally, she rolled front to back yesterday.  Let's hope she can fix herself at night now.
