Second+ time moms...new bottles?

I'm not sure if there was already a post about this. I tried searching and couldn't find any, so I'm sorry if this is a repeat post...
For any of the other second time (or third, fourth, etc): did you buy new bottles for your second? I breastfed my first for 3 months then switched to formula until I switched him to milk and still have the bottles, they were Playtex with liners. I want to get new ones for baby #2, but my fiancé doesn't think I should. Thoughts or suggestions?

Re: Second+ time moms...new bottles?

  • Maybe just new nipples? Unless there is something wrong with the bottles, no point in buying new IMO.

  • We used Dr Brown's bottles with ds and I saved them. I plan to use them with dd but plan to buy new nipples like pp said.
  • Honestly unless the nipples are degraded there's no reason to replace them either. Boiling or sterilizing them will prevent any germ transfer. If you want to try a different style and experiment with which bottle baby likes best, then definitely buy some new ones and see how he or she does. But there's no real NEED to replace any bottles or nipples that are still in good condition.
  • Thanks for the advice!
  • Especially since you used the liners, that's like a brand new bottle every time. Lol! Just check out the nippled and get new ones is they look degraded.
  • We reused the bottles and even borrowed some more from my sister!
  • For plastic, definitely if it's been more than a year. Glass should be fine but you would still want to replace the nipples.
  • We'll reuse. Pumped and gave twins top off bottles and they nursed at night for a while but since this is just one baby we shouldn't need bottles very often. The thought of buying new bottles or even sanitizing nipples seems absurd to me (I'll wash everything but just to get off any dust) but then I'm a mom of twins. We didn't even try to keep them from sharing sippy cups when one got a cold a couple weeks ago because I'd sooner believe in unicorns than that the other wasn't already exposed.

Obviously it's easier to prevent germ transfer with different ages kids but I imaging it's still approaching impossible.

Bottle nipples do need to be checked regularly to make sure they haven't degraded so definitely check for that. Also I'd be more concerned with a material that gets weaker with time like plastic, but I avoid plastic eating and drinking things for other reasons anyway.
  • Mine had degraded nipples and I wasn't in love with the bottles so I donated them and bought new for this baby.

  • I got new ones for each kid. I just use the playtex bottles with liners. With my first we weren't sure if we would have more kids so we tossed them and with my second I gave them away to my SIL. Luckily the bottles are cheap so it didn't matter.

  • I used the same bottles for DS and DD, but after DD I tossed them, they were looking rough! This baby will need all new bottles.
  • I just got new nipples with my second and plan to use same bottles (playtex with liners) for third with new nipples.
