Is taking a bath dangerous?

i am having a panic moment here. I'm Pregnant with our first and I take a bath almost every night, always have... I would say they're pretty warm, too- my legs usually turn pink. Well now I'm reading online that being exposed to prolonged heat can cause neural tube defects! I would have stopped taking baths if I had known!! Am I freaking out for no reason? Any other mommies out there take baths during the first trimester and have healthy babies?? Thanks!

  • It should be ok as long as you don't raise your temp too much. I'm one of those scorching hot, burn your flesh off, stand up and pass out bath takers- so I've switched to showers only. You should be fine if you don't overdo it with the hot water.

  • I've read that as long as your skin doesn't turn red or pink from the heat then you should be fine
  • I've heard baths are fine because they are not at a constant temperature. As soon as the water sits there it starts cooling. You might want to keep the temperature a little less scalding in the future, though.

  • Sigh... Now I'm so worried. I can't stop thinking about it! I've definitely taken several hot baths lately. Shoot. I just wish I would have known this beforehand! Thanks, ladies !
  • I wouldn't worry about it too much. In the future, just make the temp slightly cooler or don't stay in as long. For the baths you've already taken, it's unlikely that they were hot enough for long enough to significantly raise your body temp.
