helping dad soothe baby?

What things can my husband do to soothe our one month old? He gets frustrated when our son cries and has been fed, changed, burped, rocked... You name it, and then when he hands him to me, he falls quiets/falls asleep almost right away. I tell him it's boobie power, but I really want to help him. Suggestions?

Re: helping dad soothe baby?

  • We watched The Happiest Baby on the Block and it really works for us. They're all things that dads can do. There is a book also but I would just suggest watching the video so you can see how to do the "5 Ss"

  • Is he open to reading a book? Happiest Baby on the Block explains why different soothing techniques work and encourage you (and by you I mean him) to try them on LO. One big thing is that you need to be calm but I've found just telling DH to relax doesn't make him magically achieve relaxation which is why I suggested the book. You could also try having your husband baby wear to get them to bond and have him see LO relax with him.

  • Tell him to try skin to skin. My husband does this and it works like a charm
  • I second skin to skin.  My husband will lay our son on his chest and warp them both up in a blanket.  He then proceeds to playing video games or watching TV and in the middle our son is usually asleep and can be placed in his crib.
  • I would just remind him that LO's can tell when you are stressed or upset so it is best for him to remain calm. It will help the baby do the same. Does your LO like music? When DH can't get DD to stop fussing he often plays music from his phone. She loves it and calms down right away.
