Baby getting a tan?

My little guy is getting a tan. I don't use sunscreen yet and try to stay in the shade, but in the car, to and from the house, school etc, he is getting some sun everyday. Would this worry you? What do you do about running errands and going to the park?

Re: Baby getting a tan?

  • I totally let my LO get some sun! I'm careful to do just small increments at a time, and keep him from burning, but isn't some vitamin D good for them?
  • My LO enjoys a little sun everyday. His skin seems to tolerate it well. We live in New England so we take advantage of any sunlight. as a household, we do not use sunscreen at all.

  • I'm an avid sunscreen user over here & have been since my LOs were 2 months. DS is still white as a sheet while DD is starting to get herself a decent tan. I'm not too worried either way as long as they aren't baking in the sun for an extended period of time. I will likely have to keep a closer eye on him in the future with the fair skin. Like adults, I'm sure some babies tan easier and some burn easier.

None of you worry about burns or skin cancer? I'm pulling a white girl moment because I LITERALLY JUST CANT
  • your not supose to use sunscreen on babies until there atleast 6 months a little bit of sun wont hurt them but i wouldn't keep them or in it for very long.
  • @DMEL I've seen babies get burned and believe me if it happens once that mama makes sure it never happens again! I've never had a problem with it because we do sun exposure in the mornings or in the evenings. If we are out in the middle of the day we stay covered or in the shade.
  • I'm pretty paranoid about this. I used sunscreen once and he reacted badly to it so I'm very diligent about him being covered in the stroller and not being in direct sun outside. We only get one skin and I'm not about to ruin his when a few extra steps and being diligent can prevent irreversible damage.

My physician advised us to go ahead with the sunscreen after 2 months as she felt any potential side effects are believed to outweigh the risk of overexposure to the sun, especially in the high altitude environment we live in (Denver, CO)

This is my line of thinking too.  For us, this is something we are very cautious about as it just takes one blistering childhood burn to double the risk of melanoma later in life.  I'm a sunscreen freak myself and literally NEVER leave the house year-round without it on, and I have to go in for skin cancer checks three times a year.  Our pediatrician said we could use it after three months, but we just keep him always covered up or in the shade.

Not a problem to me, especially because we still go to the pool...but I have to use sunscreen or we'd all be lobsters down in Texas. The only worry I felt is when she got a freckle on her knee. I got the clear to use it at 1 month but still adviced to stay out of direct sunlight as it was in the 100s many days.
