Getting pregnant right after removal of birth control

I'm 5 weeks pregnant with my 2nd child. My 1st child will be 8 in December so there's a big gap. My 1st pregnancy went very smoothly and very few morning sickness but I'm a little scared about this pregnancy cause of course I'm older now and so is my body( not a size 4 like I was with 1st pregnancy). I've been on birth control since having my 1st son and soon I got this birth control removed, I became pregnant a month later. I have read articles about women who gotten pregnant right after the removal of mirena had miscarriages because of the lining of the uterus but I did have a cycle for month of July after it was removed so I don't know did that help or not. Am I putting too much thought in it??!!

Re: Getting pregnant right after removal of birth control

  • There seems to be a bit of misinformation about this. The risks and problems come only if you actually become pregnant while still on Mirena. This can cause ectopic pregnancy or even other more serious problems. There are a lot of anecdotes out there, but they do not equal actual research or evidence. There is no reason to think that Mirena or any birth control can seriously affect your ability to conceive or carry a baby unless you've had other complications from the birth control (having it lodged into your uterus, for example)

  • Thanks so much for that information
  • I got pregnant the same cycle my mirena was removed. She's 7.

  • I got pregnant right away after removing the IUD. I know other people who have had successful pregnancies after getting pregnant right off the IUD as well. I'm being hopeful. I go the 28th for my first u/s. (I have a daughter who will be 8 in Oct, so we have the same age gap!)
  • I'm in the same situation as you. I had my merina removed July 2nd. Had one cycle, then got pregnant on second cycle in August. I'm not concerned. My doctor said it was safe for us to start trying right away when it was removed. I'm actually really happy that we got pregnant so quickly after!
  • I got mine removed July 9 so I'm very excited that I got pregnant quickly considering I know a couple ladies that been trying to get pregnant for over a year now.
  • I stopped taking BC at the end of July and we conceived in August. I am so thankful that it was so easy Bc I know a lot of people struggle to get pregnant for years, so I hadn't wanted to share how I am feeling. I am so excited, I mean we were TTC. I just am so overwhelmed and terrified, because I didn't expect it to happen so fast. I hope this doesn't offend anyone. Am I the only one feeling this way?
  • I, too, had heard of the higher risk of having a miscarriage if you get pregnant within the first three months of stopping birth control. This comes from my mom who is a physician's assistant to an OB-GYN. I did suffer a miscarriage when I got off birth control back in 2011. It was two months after removal, that I got my BFP and then miscarried a couple weeks later.

This time around, I had my IUD removed June 25th. I was not timing BD as I was waiting until September to really start trying, and here I am with a BFP on August 24th. It has made me nervous knowing there is a chance. But as each day goes by, I grow more confident.

  • I stopped the pill beginning of July and we started trying August 7, thinking it would take a while to get things going. I must have conceived some time in the middle of August as we got our first BFP on September 5 and I'm a little under 4 weeks pregnant! We are amazed at how fast things moved (this is our first pregnancy) Having a scan Sept 24 and hoping for the best... Hugs to everyone and best of luck :)
