Tap water during pregnancy?

I've been drinking tap water throughy entire pregnancy so far. Didn't think that anything could be bad about it. Now I read all these articles that say to stay away from it. Has anyone else been drinking tap water? Or did in a previous pregnancy and their child is ok? Or does anyone know of it being bad? Just want to be informed and to calm my crazy mind down! Thanks!

  • Tap water is fine! If you've got old lead pipes you may want to let it run a few seconds before filling your cup. If your really worried I'd buy on of those filters that attaches to your faucet. They're like 20 bucks.

  • Tap water is safer than bottled water so I'll take tap over anything else! I also had tap w my previous pregnant and have a healthy 2 year old (who also drinks tap water).
  • Like a pp said if you're worried get a brita filter! I have one on my kitchen faucet, it was $16 at Walmart.

  • I prefer my city's tap water over most bottled water. It's so delicious. Any time I travel I'm reminded that most places don't have amazing tap water. It's supposed to be better for you anyway because it has all the minerals and stuff in it

  • I use a Brita only because we live in a house with really old pipes, I just felt more comfortable filtering the water for my daughter. Honestly unless there is a warning in your area to boil the water, you are fine.

  • Are you on municipal water, as opposed to a well? City water is WAY more regulated than bottled water. Who is saying it's dangerous? The only objection I could possibly see would be if someone was anti-fluoride, but then they wouldn't be drinking it anyway. Drink up. :)
  • It's fine, but I agree that a fridge filter is a great way to go too! I just like my water to be cold :)

  • The best thing is to drink filtered water from the tap. It gets rid of many pollutants, metals, chlorine, etc that are in tap water.
  • I was spoiled living in AK where tap water tastes amazing! Here is Dallas not so much so I just drink it via the filter in the fridge.
  • @Aussiechicka - I live in Anchorage, Alaska and our tap water is amazing. It comes from a glacial fed lake. I didn't really realize how lucky we were until I started reading these posts.
  • @cbou we just moved from there at the end of last year. Also I miss getting ice cold water out of the tap, luke warm out of the tap is gross!
  • I love all the stuff people say is bad for you!  My family lives right outside city limits and we actually have our own well!  We have NO filtration system at all, other that what you normally have with a well.  Nothing fancy like a Brita system or anything.  I drank our wonderful well water my entire first pregnancy, while I breastfed, and even used it to make my LO's formula bottles.  I have a completely healthy 2 yr old now.  If tap water is bad for you, don't you think your doctor would tell you that straight away?

  • I was actually wondering this, so I'm glad to hear so many say it's ok! I've been filtering it usually, sometimes it tastes weird without it. I work in a city that constantly has boil water alerts, so I do have to be careful at work though!! The water is brown a lot. They need to get their act under control.
  • Tap water is more highly regulated than bottled water.
  • Thanks for all your input!
  • I don't think it's bad for you, but I just don't love the taste. NYC tap water is good, but I just moved to NJ. I drink Smart Water - order a case every week- because I like that I can carry it with me and that it's cold from the fridge and I like the taste better.

I don't have a daughter but we do the same, sometimes our water comes out brown and I just don't agree with Maryland saying that's "normal" I grew up using a well in farm town California, so I was NOT used to the dirt. Although, I will admit I get super cocky when I change my filters and can see the amount of dirt and such it filtered out. Love my brita!
