Babies: 0 - 3 Months

How do I know if my baby is eating too much?

I have a 1 week old and it seems like she is eating a ton! I am pumping and she is being bottle fed breast milk. She is eating about every 2-3 hours and she gets about 3 oz every feeding. Sometimes it doesn't even seem like that satisfies her. I'm a FTM and this is making me extremely nervous that she is already up to 3 oz. I don't know if it's a growth spurt thing or what. Can anyone give me some insight? Thanks in advance.

  • I EBF and feed on demand, because of EBF I dont really know how much LO is eating, but if she wants more I would give it to her and mimic your pumping towards her eating as yes it could be a growth spurt and this would mean she would typically be cueing your body to produce more milk for her. I never turn DD down for feeding and every now and then this will mean feeding every hour or again right after a feeding. Typically I see an increase in my supply when she starts feeding more.

  • My baby did the same thing... I had to pump a lot at the beginning due to latch issues and it seemed like there was no satisfying him.... I would continue to feed and pump on demand... The doctor will let you know based on babies weight how they are doing feeding wise... Im sure its just fine... Google some videos and information on bottle pacing... This helped me a ton to give my baby more time to feel full... babies digest breastmilk much quicker so the time between feeding can be very short especially at the beginning... Even now at 5.5 weeks he still cluster feeds a lot during the day it sometimes feels like hes attched to my boob all day! Good lick mama im sure you are doing fine!
