2nd Trimester

Weight Gain!

this is my first baby, I'm 23 weeks pregnant and have gained 10-11 pounds. I know it's crazy of me and I sound selfish, but it's really shocking to get on the scale and be 11 pounds heavier! I feel like I've started gaining weight a little faster the past 5 weeks. Is this too much weight too soon? My BMI was normal before pregnancy.

  • Have you talked to your doctor about this? Really the only person that can truly answer your question is your doctor or midwife. I would doubt that anyone would say that is too much weight, but it really depends on your unique medical history and circumstances, which only your doctor can assess.

  • agreed with PP. but in my opinion, that's definitely not too much weight. I'm pretty sure the average woman is supposed to gain between 20-30lbs during the pregnancy. I'm only 13 weeks in & I already went from 115 to 129 :/ not happy, but at the same time it means baby & I are healthy!
mine & my boyfriend's mom gained a whole 65lbs with us!
  • It is perfectly fine, stop worrying. I know it can be jarring when u get on the scale. Some gain more early on, some more at the end and some have an even gain. As long as you eat healthy and regularly you should be fine.
  • You are pregnant. Weight gain is normal. If your doctor is not concerned then you don't need to be. Every woman is different in they way they gain/lose weight in pregnancy and breastfeeding. Yes, the recommendation is 30 pound for most healthy women, but every woman in my family has gained 50. All of us are normal size, healthy and all of us lost all of the weight and more within 6 months post. I know plenty of people that gained 25 pounds and still have that 20 pounds sticking around years later. I understand that there is a big focus on weight gain during pregnancy because of some health problems that can arise, but I also think there is no way to give a set number that all women should judge themselves over. Stress is worse for your baby than an extra 5 pounds.
  • I'm 21 weeks, I was 110 before I was pregnant and I weigh 140 now!! My doc didn't say anything about it at my last appointment and I wasn't even worried about it until I came on here and saw everyone saying they've only gained like 5 pounds!!
  • I was 128 when I got pregnant and at 22 weeks I am 153.5 :/!!
  • I wouldn't worry about it too much. Eat as healthy as you can, exercise as much as you are able/up to, and enjoy your pregnancy. :) I gained a LOT the first trimester.....and I already had a little "extra fluff" before we conceived....I am dong my best to go with the flow and make healthy decisions to the best of my ability. I will worry about excess weight after delivery, as long as the baby is healthy. :)
