Subchorionic Hematoma

Hi fellow April Mamas~
I was wondering if anyone has been diagnosed with a Subchorionic hematoma and if so, how is your baby doing? What was your experience? Did it resolve on its own without hurting the baby? I went in yesterday for a routine ultrasound (I am around 9 weeks) and after we saw the baby and the heartbeat (which looked great!), she discovered a black mass near the gestational sac that she said was a small blood clot called a Subchorionic hematoma. The doctor said it's very common and that I should try to take it easy some, but I'm still a bit concerned. Has anyone else had a similar experience? Any stories/advice is appreciated! Thanks!

Re: Subchorionic Hematoma

  • There's a lot of threads on this already but it's super common. Most tend to go away by the second trimester and you can experience some bleeding from time to time but typically it ends well.
I'd say maybe 1 out of 20 ( just a guess) patients that we see end up diagnosed with one. They tend to get better and bleed out or the body absorbes it on its own. Sometimes tho ( like in my case at 8 w1d ) it doesn't and it can grow and separate your pregnancy from the uterine wall causing fetal demise .
I have only had this happen with patients a few times and there's nothing that could have been done differently to prevent it or resolve it. Depending on how big the SCH is sometimes we tell the girls to just take it easy or in more extreme cases they are put on complete pelvic rest .
My story isn't a positive one and I'm sorry but that's how it worked out for me.

  • I've had them with my last 3 and have one with this one.  With the others, I did have some bleeding here and there has it was pushed out by growing baby, but everything resolved.  The one I have now is rather large, but my dr said he's not concerned right now.
  • I was diagnosed at 5 or 6weeks and we weren't able to see the heartbeat then. I've been so paranoid every time I go to the bathroom. I still have been spotting for over a week now. I have to go weekly until it heals. I'm praying we get a heartbeat next ultrasound.
  • I found out last week that I have one. I've just been taking it easy. The heartbeat was strong, and the doctors at the er said the OB would be able to explain it more to me. But I think I've researched all they could tell me!

  • I was told I had one at 11weeks, I stopped bleeding so my ob was not concerned. I'm not sure if it's gone or not. But I'm 18wks1d and baby is healthy.
  • Is the bleeding off and on and pretty light. I have like a rust color.
  • I had bright red bleeding. I only bled constantly throughout the day but it stopped that night.
  • I'm a first time mum to be at 10+3 weeks and also an Ob doc myself. So far i have had two threatened miscarriages in the past six weeks and i also have a subchorionic haematoma. As mentioned above, those haematomas are quite common. The prognosis depends a lot on the size of the haematoma, the smaller the better. Very large haematomas (more than 50% the size of the gestational sack) have a risk of adverse outcomes of approximately 50%. Your doctor will probably perform regular us scans to monitor the pregnancy closely.
  • @verenasmail, thank you for your response! Your words are comforting, especially coming from an OB. Last week, when she measured the SCH at about 1 cm in width and 4 cm long. She said it wasn't too big. However I am unsure of the gestational sac size. When I had the ultrasound, I was about 8 weeks, 5 days. Do you think that's big for that time?
