Does your baby sleep through the night?

Originally I was wondering if my bubba was sleeping for too long overnight and I definitely feel comforted. Babies are ALL over the place!!!

----ORIGINAL MESSAGE----

For the past week bubb(5 weeks) has been sleeping for 5-6 1/2 hour stretches at night. Im sure that she could go longer if I let her I'm just so worried about her not realising that she's still hungry.

Tonight I woke her up after 5 hours to offer a feed and she turned it down and went straight back to sleep. She's perfectly healthy and mainly 'on demand' breastfed. (Supply issues on my end)

How long does your baby sleep at night? Do you wake them for a feed?

Re: Does your baby sleep through the night?

  • My LO (5.5 weeks) can sometimes go 5 hours, maybe more, but I have woke him at 5 hours. I worry too much longer could mean he wakes extremely hungry, angry, & uncomfortable!! He's still under 8 lbs. last weight was 7lbs 8oz. He is gaining well now, but took nearly a month to get back to birth weight of 6lbs 11oz.
  • I'm lucky if I get 3 hours...
But my older son was sleeping longer stretches by now (6wks) and sleeping through the night by about 8wks. I didn't wake him because he was gaining weight fine.

  • Our LO is 4 weeks & has been sleeping from 12am to about 8am for the past week. He eats 4 oz every 3 hours & takes short naps throughout the day like from 20 minutes to an hour & a half. He went from 7lbs 14oz to 9 lbs in a month so he's not having issues with hunger or gaining. I'm so thankful for the sleep
  • My daughter is 5 weeks and she will usually give us one 6-7 hour stretch at night. During the day I don't let her go longer than 3-4 hours but let her go as long as she will at night. Usually she will go somewhere between 5-7 hours.
  • DS is 8 weeks old and for the past week or two he's been he's been sleeping through the night from 10-6 or 7.

At his 1 month appointment he had slept through the night 1or 2 times or he would wake up once a night to eat. I mentioned it to his doctor and asked if I should wake him up more to eat during the night and she said no way and to let him sleep. He does eat a lot during the day though to make up for missed feedings during the night
  • My doctor said the same thing that @gmk1784 said! As long as he was back up to birthweight and making up for feedings throughout the day I could let him sleep. He's slept through the night 6-8 hours at 3.5 weeks.
  • My LO is 6 weeks and just started giving us 5-6 hour stretches. He does wake up super hungry, but as long as the baby has wet and poopy diapers still and is gaining, let her give you sleep
  • 8 weeks here and wakes every 2-3 hours. Sometimes he will give me one 4 hour stretch. I feel like he's never going to sleep.
  • Lucky!! Our daughter is 11 weeks and she eats every 2-3 hours throughout the day and night.

Our LO is 8 weeks and on average, she's asleep by 11pm and will wake sometime around 4 am hungry. Then, she will usually go back to sleep until around 930am.

I wouldn't wake her. If she's hungry enough, she'll wake up.
  • My LO is 8 weeks. Some nights he will sleep 6-7 hours. I don't wake him. I do wake up to pump though. He just eats more in the morning. He only wakes up once at night. Sometimes twice. Then our first two morning feeds are only about an hour apart
  • 6wks and he asks to be fed every 2-3hrs day and night (or 4hrs at night if I'm lucky!!!). I'm exhausted and feel ill never get a long stretch of sleep again, but if he's hungry, he's hungry! As long as he's fed he's a happy baby that basically never cries or fusses, so I really can't complain too much.
  • My LO is 6.5 weeks. She goes down at about 930 and sleeps until 4 or so and then back to bed until 7-9 am. She is gaining plenty of weight and eats every 2 hours or so during the day. She has been doing this since week 2
  • Nope! My little guy hardly sleeps at night at all. He still has days and nights mixed up! Most nights he's up and alert for the majority of the night. Sleeps from about 2am-11am but wakes up every 3 hours to eat. I'm trying to bring him out more during the day to establish day vs night but it's been brutal.

My LO is exactly the same! We were waking her up every 4 hours at night until she was 6 weeks and my midwife said to let her sleep, now we get one good 6-7 hour stretch and then two 3 hour stretches. Hope it lasts but we will enjoy it for now!

This is my LO exactly. She only cries when she's hungry and at night goes back to sleep right after eating so I can't complain too much - but I'm super jealous of everyone whose babies are sleeping so great at n!
  • LO will be 6w tomorrow and is sleeping 7-8 hours. Put her down at 8 or 9 and she sleeps until 4 or 5. She usually feeds well before she goes down and when she wakes up. I have to pump during the night to keep up supply. Our doctor recommended going a size bigger with her diaper at night and this was a blessing in disguise because she no longer wakes up because she's wet.
  • Our baby boy is 6 1/2 weeks, EFF, 11.5 pounds. He is not consistent at all but he slept up to 5 1/2 hours at night a few times. We woke him up ONCE after a few hours to feed and we will never do that again because he was quite angry and we could not settle him down for hours.

Just had to share - my LO is 8 weeks and she fell asleep around 1130 or midnight and didn't wake up until 8am this morning! I couldn't believe it! I woke up several times in the night because I am so used to her waking up around 3 or 4am. Of course, now her eating schedule is all screwy... she ate when she woke up and then ate just a couple hours later. I think we're caught up now...

My LO is almost 8weeks and wakes up every hour or two!!! The longest he's slept was 4 hours, but that was once when he was about two weeks old. My husband and I have just about given up on sleep.
  • Wow!!! Thanks for the input ladies. It seems like most people are getting good stretches of bubba sleeping at night.

LO is 8 weeks and EBF. The longest he goes is 3 hours from 10p-1am, after his first night feed, he only sleeps for 2 hours. After that feed, 1.5 hours. Once the sun comes up, he will only sleep next to me after a feed.

  • My son is 8 weeks, he's in bed by 9 and sleeps til 6 or 7am.
He's taking 9oz, but I have him on a routine of bath, massage, bottle and bed.
I find it helps calm him down. And he sleeps way longer
  • 7 weeks old, usually sleeps for 3-4 hour stretches at night. Tonight it was 7! Fell asleep at 8:30 and woke up at 3:30! Of course I was up every hour from 12:30 on, checking on her

My girl eats every 2 hours during the day but after her bath (6-7) she sleeps for 5 hours, wakes up when I go to bed (around 11) eats for about 5-10 minutes and sleeps another 5-6 hours, wakes up again to eat a little bit but she doesn't even cry or open her eyes, she just moves a lot until I take her out of her bassinet and sleeps again for 4-5 hours. She has been like this since the Doctor told me to stop waking her up to nurse at our 1 week check up, except for 3 nights when she woke up for 1-2 hours in the middle of the night.

She's 7 weeks and last week she was 3 pounds and 1.3 inches over her birth weight and height.
  • My daughter just did this... She's done us before about a week ago.. She went down at 830p wIke up at 3a back to sleep after 2oZ.. Now awake at 7 eating now almost 4oz..

No joke the most sleep I've had straight through since before 20 weeks!!

It felt so good I actually stayed up till 5 and applied for a certificate program at a local college and fasfa!!

    :D now drinking coffee.

I hope all you momma get this experience soon.. And I will also note yesterday was hell.. She would only sleep 15-20 mins, eat a little then fussy fussy fussy!! We also traveled three hours this weekend to see family but I can't believe she slept that well.
  • This is how she feels today lol! #teamnohair
  • My guy is 6.5 weeks and has been sleeping from 9pm to 5-6am he wakes up for a feeding and changed then goes back to sleep till 930-10am he's been doing that now for 4 weeks we never had a problem with him gaining weight! He is 12.8 lbs and 25 inches at birth he was 9.3lbs and 20.5 inches
  • Consider yourself lucky if your LO is already sleeping 5-6 hours stretch at night at this stage! As long as baby is eating okay, gaining weight and has enough pee/poo, there should be no reason to worry. My LO started doing this at week 2 and my paediatrician wasn't concerned about it at all.

I'm so glad I'm not the only one! My little one is turning 10 weeks and all he does is eat. And I seem to be changing a fully soaked diaper every hour or two. He'll pick a night time routine and hold it for a few days, then suddenly he'll switch it up on me. Sometimes I get 6 hours of sleep straight, other nights I'm up once an hour! He also seems to prefer pooping only in the morning now, so I'm wondering if that's affecting his sleep schedule.

Definitely jealous of those of you getting hours of sleep.

  • My son is 7 weeks and I'm lucky if he'll sleep 3 hours between feelings at night. Occasionally it will be 4-5 but then it will be 1.5-2 between the next feelings.
  • @bblais8 sounds a lot like my 6.5 week old LO.
  • My girl did almost an 8 hour stretch last night (9-4:30)but her diaper was totally dry...I didn't like that. I don't think I'll let her do that again.
