Car seat issues

my son gets so upset in his car seat.. In the infant seat I put him in it and he gets so upset, but most of the time when we get moving he is fine.. I tried a meenno cooling insert and it didn't help. He felt so hot I thought he was just over heating. We have a light show mirror and a fan for him to try to keep him busy.. I thought maybe it was the car seat so I bought a convertible and it's even worse in this one because he cries the entire trip.. I feel so guilty I don't want to leave the house.. He started doing this with his BOB stroller as well.. I am thinking it's the harness, but don't know what to do or if it is that.. Anyone have these problems and have suggestions?

Re: Car seat issues

  • I had the exact same problem when my little girl was about 6-8 weeks old. The only advice I can give you is to keep going for a drive a day and know it won't last forever. My daughter would scream bloody murder, moving or not, in her car seat. It lasted a couple weeks. I tried adjusting her harness to the next height up and she was slightly happier (or maybe it was just in my head) I also took out the infant insert around 8 weeks and that seemed to help keep her a little cooler. We'd go for about a 15 minute drive a day when she was full, burped and happy, and she'd get mad within 5 minutes in the seat. After two weeks of this, she finally learned that the seat wasn't all that bad and she could play with her toys on the drive. I know the frustration you're experiencing. You feel horrible and wish you could do something but just know it won't be like this forever. Hang in there.

  • Now that she's more interested in toys, I can sometimes get a break from the 'screaming because my car seat is killing me'.  I give her a soft animal/blankie, and then clip a soft crinkle book or something to the car seat strap.  Nothing hard in case of a sudden stop or accident.  She hates being restrained, swaddled, etc. so I don't have a lot of hope that it's really going to get better any time soon.

I was tossing around moving her to her convertible seat, but I'm much less optimistic about that now... :P

Be careful moving the shoulder straps - in an infant car seat they should come from below, then up and over the shoulder, not from above the shoulder.  Make sure lo is big enough!
