I think I'm definitely going to go cold turkey. I am going to look into the La Croix and other flavored waters. I can only imagine how cranky and snarky I'm going to be for a few days/week/however long.
I support your decision!
And regarding the snarky bit, everyone here will still love you
Has anyone ever successfully stopped drinking soda? I have drank it daily since I was about 16 years old and I'm honestly getting tired of it, but it is an addiction. I think about quitting weekly but then I don't have the willpower to go through with it. So, if you have quit altogether (or cut back significantly), what did you do? How long did it take? How bad were the withdrawals? I know I may react differently but I am genuinely looking for any ideas.
I know someone that got kidney stones from Mountain Dew and it really freaked me out. I used to love pop (my Michigan is showing...) but I just went cold turkey for a long time. I stopped buying it for my house, stopped ordering it at restaurants (and hey, water is free), and after a while, if I tried to go back to have a pop it was WAY too sweet for me. Maybe try to wean yourself by substituting pop for something else, like tea or lemonade. You will probably feel a lot better after you stop drinking it--it's basically just liquid candy. I'd prefer to eat my calories than drink them.
@RachelT1234 That is what I was thinking. It is called POP!!! Also funny, the area I grew up in said pop and where I live now is soda and I have had four separate occasions when they thought I said pot. Always funny/awkward because the conversation is "I really want some pop" and I'm at work and they just stare at my oddly till I say like Diet Pepsi. Then they have the ohhhhhh face.
I am soo addicted to coke zero.... I would like to point out though too that I drink it has my coffee in the morning because I do not like coffee and that is how I get my caffeine in the morning before I teach. I have been slowly cutting back the amount of soda I drink preparing for when I will hopefully become pregnant, trying to drink more flavored water. My problem I have been noticing now is I drink way more wine after work because if I cannot have my coke zero then I am going to at least have some wine because water even flavored water will not cut it after 8 plus hours of middle school kids all day long. So that strategy will not really work when I am hopefully pregnant.... it is going to suck when I have to cut out both coke zero and my wine at the same time.....

Good luck and FX the withdraw doesn't last too long!
I know that every one calls it something different (soda, pop, soda pop, or coke) but I can not help but think every time someone calls it pop that "pop" is a sound not a drink. lol
I often don't drink enough but when i did it was always ice tea. I just quit on day and switched to plain water. Whenever my glass was empty i refilled immediately, so i always had a full glass on the table. Maked it less tempting to get something else. And a remedy for the headache could be to drink more water. Worked for me. But you have to try what works best for you. Edit : had to use the bathroom a lot since my bladder wasn't used to the amount of water i started to drink
Hmmm, I am not a huge soda person other than a ginger beer every now and then, but maybe you could start slow and switch to a lemonade or tea, then you can move to flavoring water with fruits. Hope you find something that works for you
I have been "addicted" to Mountain Dew since I started college. When I had jobs I actually had to leave my house to get to, I'd drink Mountain Dew continuously. When I got my work from home job last November, I stopped drinking as much of it. Now I average no more than 20oz a day at the most (if that - some days I don't drink any soda) and the rest of the time is typically water. I do better regulating my intake when it is in small bottles or canned form. If it is a two liter it is too tempting and goes fast. I'm very picky about my water. I'll drink whatever is available when out in public, but my water at home has to be Deer Park.

Mu husband used to drink 8-10 Diet Cokes every day. He wanted to stop so he switched to unsweetened iced tea. He would make a big pitcher and keep it in the fridge. He slowly weaned himself off of the carbonation and eventually off of tea to mostly water. He still drinks soda when we are at a restaurant but we no longer buy it at home. Good luck!
I was also an addict to coke especially. Then one day I stopped. I drink water or speaking water/seltzer. I bough a soda stream so I don't have to pay for expensive sparkling water. At restaurants I get club soda and saying really fast before my resolve goes away and I cave in to a coke. I also ate a lot of fresh fruit for those couple of weeks (still do) to substitute the sugar craving. It really helped. And I am now successfully off soda. Actually now if I indulge and get it I feel yucky because it's not clean and refreshing like water or it's too syrupy compared to sparkling water. Give it one week then be strong and continue to two weeks. By two weeks you'll be good to go. Make sure those two weeks you drink half your body weight in oz of water every day. It will keep you hydrated and flush out the remaining toxins. Good Luck and be strong! Think of a healthy baby!
It's starting tomorrow ladies, I had my last coke tonight! Which coincided with a great migraine (which thanks to FF, I am now figuring out I get them when I O, or so it seems).
I didn't feel as though I could go cold turkey so I set myself up with a plan. I cut down gradually so that my withdraw symptoms, which I've gotten before, weren't as bad. I've always gotten bad headaches and sometimes migraines when I tried to cut out caffeine entirely. I am a tea junkie.
Before I started cutting down, I knew that I needed to find something else that I would like to drink. We have a local tea shop called Fezziwigg's Gourmet Tea and they have an amazing blackberry burst. It's a botanical tea and has absolutely no caffeine. It's got an amazing taste and I feel much more refreshed when I drink it. Because I'm not combining it with caffeine I also count it towards my daily water intake.
I would just advise finding something else you like and gradually weaning yourself off of it. Good luck, I know how hard it is!
