2nd Trimester

Probably TMI... But who cares.

This may be TMI, but I am 23 weeks and I find the past week I am consistently vomiting in my mouth. Like probably 2-3 times an hour, sometimes more. It comes on so suddenly and without warning that half the time I'm not able to spit it out and have to swallow it. It is rarely a large amount.. Usually only a tiny bit. And it comes with a mild heartburn sensation but nothing too dramatic.

I've tried adjusting my diet and I make sure I stay sitting up after eating, but it hasn't been helping. I still get MS but am used to that, this is different.

Just wondering if anyone is going through the same thing and if anyone has found a remedy. I prefer not to take any pills.

  • Thats acid reflux and generally u'll feel like there is excess acid in ur stomach.

You have to eat more alkaline foods like cabages, spinach, brocolli, cauliflower and fruits like kiwifruit, apples apricots and citrus fruits have an alkaline effect on your body but stay away from oranges - i find they upset my stomach

You can't eat a heavy meal so you have to eat small portions and make sure you drink evenly throughout the day. Make sure ur body is upright 2-3 hours before lying down to make sure acid doesn't rise thru ur oesophagus.

If these don't help, buy an antacid liquid from the pharmacy such as gaviscon and u can also buy antacid lollies that u suck on.

I took the liquid 1st night after dinner and next morning and after that around every 2-3 days once, don't take it as per dosage of 4x daily as you can get bloated and its not designed to be taken long term hence why i take it once every few days

I'm almost 21 weeks and staying from acidic foods and softdrinks definitely has helped.

  • @EvaD84 thanks! I knew it was acid reflux but I haven't found anything to calm it yet. I have been eating alkaline foods and I only ever had carbonated water before this, but I stopped drinking it as soon as the reflux started. Nothing with changing my diet has helped.
I really prefer not to take any medications, even OTC, but I will keep it in mind as a last resort.
  • Maybe ask your OB about what you can do? Like on top of adjusting your diet, is there anything you can take or do they have info that they give out to patients for this type of symptom?

  • The only thing that helped when my heartburn progressed to acid reflux was Pepcid.
  • Taking an OTC medication would help the most. Tums are actually class c and probably won't help reflux much. Zantac is class B and has always worked great for me.

  • It's not the heartburn that bothers me. The constant vomiting and the feeling of having a rock in my throat bothers me. I don't have an OB yet... I was with my family doctor until 22 weeks and start going to an OB at 26 weeks. My family doctor is so busy I hate to bother him with something that isn't life threatening.
  • That acid can rot your teeth and cause harm to your esophagus. I understand not wanting to take meds but it's only for a few months and is probably better than the harm you're doing to your body by allowing it to continue.

  • It might be GERD, which is basically really really bad heartburn. My understanding is that the (i'm going to use non medical terms) flap between your stomach and your esophagus becomes very irritated by the acid in your stomach and can actually get burned. Which then of course, starts the cycle. Once the flap is burned, food starts to come back up very easily, then in turn also burning the esophagus as well. It's worth getting looked at for sure and may require medicine to heal the flap.
  • Thanks everyone. Like I said, I rarely get heartburn. It's not like I'm throwing up acid. It's more a vomiting reflux.
  • When I had GERD, I never really had the feeling of heartburn either, or very rarely. And I never vomited acid, it was always the food I had just eaten. It would sort of just come up out of nowhere. No gagging or crazy retching, just food coming up slowly into my mouth.
  • @chaelainev like pp have said. Gerd is a possibility but regardless of what you think it is I would highly suggest you bringing it up to your dr soon. Good luck and I hope you get some relief soon. :)

  • I had horrible heartburn and acid reflux for YEARS. I'd keep tums on my bedside table because heartburn would wake me up in the middle of the night. Just by chance I started drinking a fermented coconut and probiotic drink called Kevita because I liked it, and my heartburn WENT AWAY. Completely. It's a little bit worse in pregnancy, but still not bad enough for any OTC meds.

    Kevita for the win!
  • Having a lot of reflux/heartburn too. I take tums and eat small meals. That's my biggest recommendation: do not stuff yourself. It's hard because everyone around you is saying "you are eating for two!" or "baby needs more!" as they pile food in front of you.
