High-Risk Pregnancy

Dating Scan Frustration

My last pregnancy I ended up having my son 2 months premature. They couldn't find a reason why, just spontaneous preterm labour. That, combined with my epilepsy made my current pregnancy automatically high risk. In saying that, you'd think being high risk you'd get your first scan relatively early in the pregnancy, right? Well our dating scan isn't scheduled until 13 weeks - 5 days, that's practically week 14. I'm beyond frustrated that I'm not able to be seen any earlier than this. I spoke to the hospital and they said their hands were tied, to speak with my doctor. My doctor said there wasn't much he could do but when I see my midwife for my booking appointment see if she can speak with the hospital to get the scan moved up. Finally had my booking appointment yesterday and the midwife said she doesn't have much pull and doubts she can get the scan moved up, but suggested we go to the scan desk at the hospital and explain the situation to them. Well my partner went there today and they said they won't move up the scan. The best we can do is call every day and see if there's a cancellation. Which still doesn't help me at all because I work in the mornings, it's not likely I'd be able to drop everything and race back to the hospital in time for the appointment.

I'm just really disappointed that no one seems to be taking things seriously. I'm sure things with this pregnancy are fine, but some reassurance would definitely be nice, for peace of mind if nothing else.

Guess I just needed to rant. Has anyone been in a similar situation? Generally, when was your first scan appointment during your high risk pregnancy?

Re: Dating Scan Frustration

  • From what I read, depending on where you live things differ. I'm in Texas and had mine a little after six weeks, they say they don't expect to see anything before that. I'm so sorry that you have to wait to long, though. Could you get in sooner to check your hcg and progesterone levels? That would be better than nothing...

  • I wish I could, they seem pretty firm on this 14 week appointment however. Problem is right now I'm living in the UK so I'm at the mercy of their rules. Thankfully I'm going back to Canada next month and will be able to do things the way I'm used to with a proper OB and none of this midwife nonsense.

  • I am high risk due to being a diabetic. I had my first U/S, scan, etc when I was 20 weeks. There were other pregnant women around me that had normal healthy pregnancies and had multiple scans. Some had one every appt. I guess it depends on your practice, insurance, etc. To be honest, I trusted my doctor, he was very good, so I didn't necessarily worry about not having  so many u/s, scans, etc.
  • @lavenderash Go to er. They will do a scan. I wouldn't do it bc it cost 100 bucks, but for your piece of mind it might be worth it.
