June 2015 Moms

Flat head

I've been lurking for a while and haven't introduced myself because it's just so crazy busy with baby. I was a very active on the TTC board and Pregnant after a loss about a year ago. Things on the bump changed a lot and I left the board for a long while. But now I'm back and hoping I can be involved with all the JUNE mommies! I am a first time mom to a sweet baby boy who is now 11 weeks old!

Anyway, my post is regarding flat head syndrome. My son right side is super flat. The doctor said just to keep him on the opposite side during the day as much as possible, but didn't suggest anything else. I went on line and it looks like there is a beanie called the "Tortle" which may help to correct this. Has anyone tried this before? Anyone else going through this?

Re: Flat head

  • I've heard of people using helmets to correct a flat head. I've never heard of the Tortle. Same idea?

The helmet is usually prescribed by a physician. The Tortle is available at Baby's R Us and other stores. I really hope it corrects itself soon!

  • I have no experience with helmets but DS1 and DS2 both flattened out (evenly, though). The doctor say they would get round again once they got mobile and she was right. LO is also flattening out and I'm not worried about it.
  • My friend's baby had a flattened head/face on one side and got a helmet. It made a HUGE difference. I encourage you to talk with your pediatrician. Good luck!
  • A friend of mines son had a head as flat as the ground and she dr said its just cosmetic and most babies will now have it because of SIDS advice and always being on their back. Our generation didn't have it because we were sleeping on our bellies
  • Thank you ladies!!!!! I'll keep doing what my pediatrician advised me to do.

  • We're having that issue. My daughter has torticollis (muscle in one side of the neck is shorter/tighter) which causes her to only be able to sleep on one side of her head so she has a flat spot. We've been stretching that muscle and she starts physical therapy soon so she's able to move to the other side more...I've noticed her sleeping more on the back of her head in her swing instead of that one side so YAY :)
  • @SJ1604 hope your little one eventually flattens out!
