Milk of Magnesia

Well- I got a little problem and this was listed as pregnancy safe based on the literature the doc gave me. I'm 12 weeks 4 days (2nd trimester right?) but I'm worried about the cramping. Anyone have any experience with this while pregnant? I rarely use laxatives.

Re: Milk of Magnesia

  • Go the lowest dose possible and see if it works.  Drink tons of water with it too.  If you want to try to avoid MoM, something that always causes me to gooooooo is chugging a ton of apple juice - like at least 32oz as quick as you can.  It works quicker than a laxative.

Yikes! That's a lot of apple juice! Good to know, though.

  • Ice cream always does the trick for me - but I am a little sensitive to the milk. It's nice to have an excuse to gorge myself though lol!
  • Try magnesium salts... even as an Epsom bath

  • Both DS and I are on the backed up side so I purchased prune juice and granola yesterday, its worked for both of us. We also eat a ton of apples with the peel on and that helps add some fiber into the diet too. If you are worried about over the counter laxatives try food first, besides at this point I'm always hungry so it doesn't hurt to snack on something that is multi-purpose. I tried Colace for two days and it didn't work at all.

  • I have been taking colace, need to take it for a few days to get going. Also prunes helped me when j was miserable
  • Miralax is really gentle and doesn't cause immediate results or cramping or anything.  Maybe try that for a couple days instead of milk of magnesia?

That's good to know about Miralax, it says to talk to your dr if you are pregnant or breastfeeding on the bottle, so I was going to ask at my appt tomorrow.
