High-Risk Pregnancy

Sparkling ICE water/T1D

Hi ladies, I am 6w6d, and the morning sickness has kicked in something fierce in the last week. I have no appetite on top of the nausea, and am struggling to drink anything. Water sounds horrific, and if it doesn't have bubbles, it's unlikely to stay down. I'm also a Type 1 diabetic, so my options for drinking sweetened beverages are limited. I'm trying to avoid aspartame, and I've found these Sparkling ICE waters that come in several flavors. The lemonade one I had today made me feel better than I have all week. The trouble is, I'm not sure if they're ok during pregnancy. I haven't been able to get in to my OB yet, so I was hoping for some feedback here. They have green tea extract in them, and I can't find any info about if that's safe during pregnancy or not. Any experience with this beverage? Thanks!

Re: Sparkling ICE water/T1D

  • I've had it this pregnancy and it was fine. As long as it doesn't have caffeine (which it doesn't) or crazy herbs (which it doesn't), then you're fine. If you want to be 100% confident just call your doctor and leave the nurse a message, she may even be able to email you a copy of their approved/not approved list of things.

  • I have drank these throughout my pregnancy with no issues! I have read a few places that there are certain ingredients in green tea that are supposed to be consumed cautiously during pregnancy but I would think unless you're drinking tons of straight green tea, it wouldn't be an issue! Also in terms of sugar-free and aspartame-free sweetened drinks, there is a brand called SyFo that also has some tasty choices, and there is another brand that I have only found at Publix but I can't think of the name of it. If you're in the southern US, look on the water aisle of Publix, it's a clear bottle with a green cap, and they are so good! Just some alternatives if you get tired of the ICE waters!
  • Also highly recommend La Croix sparkling waters. Unsweetened, but delicious flavors!

  • I drank several of these without really thinking much about it, to me honest.  If you are really worried, you can also try buying sparkling water and adding your favorite fruits to it.  It would be kind of like sweetening it yourself.

I love those ones too - so many great flavours, when I find them I like to stock up!

  • I am a T1D on insulin pump at 15 weeks. ICE drinks were literally my lifeline for my first trimester. I never have anything with artificial sweeteners or dye except for those, so my dr wasn't worried about having those ad a treat to make it through the rough times. Also, I am extremely sensitive to caffeine, but those drinks didn't affect me at all so they must be really low in caffeine.
  • For anyone else that comes across this post if you check their FAQ section they do say the green tea extract contains no caffeine and also the artificial sweetener that is used is sucralose and when I googled that it did say that it was safe for pregnancy! So drink away ladies!
