Stretch mark oil

Has anyone started using stretch mark prevention products? I know many people say there's nothing you can do about it, genetics, meant to be e.t.c.. But I know several people who have used the product "bio oil" and have not gotten a single stretch marks despite becoming rather large during pregnancy and being small people overall. I just started to use it but I am a little worried about some of the ingredients, I typically use nontoxic products and this definitely is not one of them. Anyone have any experiences or comments about this?
Thanks!!

Re: Stretch mark oil

  • I would ask your dr about it. I'm personally one of those people that believe if you're going to get them, you're just going to get them. I've used cocoa butter and really liked it. :) I don't have any but no woman in my family has them so I do believe it's a genetic thing. Although I could be wrong lol. Good luck and congrats on your pregnancy! :)

  • Cocoa butter or coconut oil.... There is no way of preventing other than trying not to put on too much weight too quickly

  • I am using Mama Bee by Burt's Bee it is %100 original, I can't stand sweet smells and can't be sure about the others safety so this one is the best due to my research :) I use it everyday since 8w
  • I have a 13 month old and I stretched out like a walrus however I never got a stretch mark. I used organic coconut oil for cooking. I lathered that one and stained some tank tops but it was worth it. I'm doing it this pregnancy again too. I love it and it's like $6 a jar so it's cheaper then that coconut hitter lotion they try to sell.
  • That's something people say that really is true, you just can't prevent them. I did find that the cocoa butters made me feel better and the stretch marks less itchy so I continued to use it. I used bio oil after I had DD and it didn't make a difference at all on the appearance or size of the stretch marks. I used Mederma as well as vitamin E oil and I thought both of those did help. I didn't really care that I had the stretch marks but I was given all of those products by other people so I gave them a shot :)
  • Another cocoa butter user here and I did not get stretch marks. I got pretty big by the end (gained 40 lbs), but my weight gain was steady.

  • Lots and lots and lots of stretch marks here :) this time I'm using a homemade body butter made of shea butter, coconut oil, and almond oil - for itchiness only.

  • My mother and sisters both have them and was worried I would be the same so I used bio oil daily for all of my first pregnacy and didnt end up with any stretch marks. Im 14 weeks pregnant with my second, fingers crossed it works just as well this time!
  • I use weleda all natural pregnancy oil.. It's great but I live in Europe and am not sure if it's also available in the us
  • I have been using Mother's Special Blend which was recommended by a friend who used it and ended up with no stretch marks.
  • I've just started using the honest company (Jessica alba) organic belly balm - obviously I won't know how well it works for another 7 months but it feels nice haha and most important thing for me is its all natural!
  • I was enormous (9.5lbs baby), didn't use anything, and got no stretchmarks at all. So there's your data point.

If you're going to get them, you're going to get them regardless. Moisturize if your skin is dry, of course, but don't use products that you don't trust the ingredients of (and I wouldn't touch bio-oil) on the off chance that they'll prevent stretchmarks.

  • I love some cocoa butter! I used it in both my previous pregnancies and have minimal stretch marks not sure it actually helped but I'll be doing it again beginning around 16 weeks or so
  • I'm short and petite, and I grew to epic proportions with both my girls, especially my second who was 9lbs9oz at birth. It was seriously comical/painful/absurd at the end, belly stuck straight out like a torpedo. I didn't get any stretch marks on my belly and I never used any lotions or creams or anything.

With my second, my boobs were normal (read:tiny) during the pregnancy but then when my milk came in they went from A cups to E cups, maybe even bigger. It happened so fast that my poor rack is now covered in stretch marks.

Wait, do stretch marks cause itchiness? If so, does it happen only while the skin is stretching, or at any time? Sometimes my breasts get SO FREAKING ITCHY OMG I WANT TO DIE, and it never even occurred to me that it could possibly have something to do with the stretch marks.
  • Hey girl!!! I personally started using stretch mark are that I sell, as soon as i found out I was pregnant! My best friend used it her whole pregnancy and had ZERO stretch marks post baby!
  • I just bought a big bottle of 100% cocoa and Shea butter. Haven't used it yet. Smells funny too but I hope it works!!
  • I always uses my preferred lotion to help with the itchy belly. My mother had 3 kids and I have had 4 so far and neither of us have stretch marks. Well stretch marks on our stomachs ;)
  • I agree with all the ladies saying it's all down to your skin and not using product. My mom had zero stretch marks until she had her 3rd and I got TONS with my DD. I used stretch mark cream but more for the easing itch part than preventing them. I knew from my puberty stretch marks I was likely doomed.

I wear my stretch marks with pride.
  • I was using mama bee by burts bee but my doc changed it to lierac and told me that mama bee is natural ok but only some naturals oils they just relax you that's all scratches are made of lack of collagen so lierac will have boost collagens, rich of what we need at these weeks. Just sayin..

I don't think stretch marks cause itchiness.  I just have super sensitive skin.  Lots of dryness.  And it comes out with pregnancy for me - like super super super itchy!!!

They 100% caused itchiness for me! Part of it is just that your boobs are growing and stretching, it doesn't necessarily mean you'll get stretch marks, but anywhere that I did get stretch marks last time was hella itchy. I don't even care about the stretch marks but the itchiness sucks!

Yes my boobs got crazy itchy with my first but no stretch marks there. My tummy was not itchy and I got a ton of stretch marks. So itchiness does not tie to stretch marks. I just had to put on a ton of lotion to help soothe the dry skin.  One of my friend swears by bio-oil  but I just use coconut oil.
